Location, and design.
Beds uncomfortable, covered in weighty blankets, and only one pillow each.

STAFF: The staff are kind and helpful - but be warned that most do NOT speak English. GROUNDS: The exterior of the property is quaint and pretty. There are lovely gardens and cobblestone walkways between the properties. SAFETY: It felt quite safe because it's like a little gated village: many buildings surrounded by a very high wall and massive gates. Each little building has 4 hotel rooms, 2 up and 2 down.
BREAKFAST: It's terrible - expect to have to eat somewhere else. Breakfast consists of bread that looks like a tough hamburger bun, butter, jelly, bad coffee, an egg (plain fried or plain scrambled only) and fresh fruit (which you of course should not eat for fear of Montezuma's Revenge). RUN DOWN & MALFUNCTIONING PROPERTY: The property is quite run down. Our group stayed in a total of 8 rooms over the course of 2 stays, so we got a good look at the rooms. It's cold at night in Urubamba in July (their winter) so you need heat. The radiators didn't work in our rooms ("We'll fix it tomorrow"). After long discussions they brought us electric space heaters, which didn't heat the rooms. There was no hot water in one of the showers ("We'll fix it tomorrow") so my daughter had to shower in my room. The power went out several times, once for an entire day! The lock on the door of our upstairs suite wouldn't stay locked. The bathroom door lock (one of those push-button locks) kept randomly locking itself and locking us out. Overall it's just an old and tired property: the blankets are pilling, there are no bars on the towel racks, the wood floors are old and peeling, the paint is grimy, the shutters are old and don't close tightly, etc. We wouldn't choose to stay here again.
