The property is huge so there is plenty of space for everyone including social spaces. It has a generous amount of bathrooms too which was great. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking and bathrooms had plenty of toilet roll and hand soap to last the stay. Beds were comfortable. Towels are provided (if you prefer a big fluffy towel then I would bring some). It is SO quiet that sleeping with the windows open is a joy, you can only hear the animals, and the wind. There is a good selection of board games and dvds. The house has WiFi (though this doesn’t quite reach to the downstairs bedroom). There is a washer / dryer and airer which was useful after muddy hikes.
We explored so much of Skye over our two weeks from this base and most things are within an hour / hour and a half drive. It really is the most beautiful island. We would recommend Quiraing, Old Man of Storr, Neist Point, many waterfalls, Kilt Rock, Staffin Beach, Fairy Glen, Fairy Pools, Puffin cruise from Uig, and the loch cruise from Elgol. All offered joyous moments and otherworldly landscapes.
In terms of more local activities (within 30 minutes), there are hikes directly from the house which we really enjoyed. Walking down to the loch is so peaceful and there are a range of birds you can watch. We ate at Red House one evening which was walkable and also really enjoyed the village of Waternish which was 20 mins away and has the oldest Inn on Skye which served delicious food, a lovely fairy bridge, a guided tour of the tannery and some lovely small bespoke craft shops - pottery and glass. Dunvegan Castle is also very close and the gardens were phenomenal (you can book seal tours though we didn’t do this). We also completed the gin tasting at the distillery in Portree (a very generous 5 tastings and the pizzeria next door was exceptional)and there were some independent lovely shops to walk around.
We had some problems at the start - no fire lighters / wood for fire / log burner not cleaned out and all three outside bins were overflowing with rubbish. I contacted the owner and these issues were resolved within 2 days - firefighters sent via Amazon (2 day delivery), rubbish was collected (2 days later) and we fetched wood from the garage.
Inside, the house could have been cleaner. Whilst bedding, bathrooms and the kitchen were clean, windows (glass and frames), corners (ceilings and floor) had not been cleaned and were full of cobwebs, dust and spiders. The lounge windows were quite dirty which spoilt the views. We cleaned bedroom and bathroom window frames inside so we could open them without putting our hands through spider webs! Quite a few of the window fasteners were also quite wobbly.
The track to get to the house is full of potholes so you just need to drive very carefully and slowly. It takes about 10 minutes from the house to the main road. Sheep freely roam so you need to keep an eye on them and also, the farmer moves his cows to the fields near the house so we did have a few days of cows wandering on the track between the two gates.
In our second week, window fitters woke my husband just before 830am. Later, I saw a message from the owner (from the night before though I did not read this message as we were out until late and I didn’t have notifications for booking.com enabled) informing us of this and offering to buy breakfast to compensate. I did not think it reasonable to expect us to accommodate for windows to be fitted early in the morning during heavy rain whilst we were on holiday so this was really disappointing.

This was a completely magical place! The house was a home. We settled in and felt a part of its beautiful surroundings. There is not enough space here to list all the wonderful aspects of The Diubaig House. The sheep and lambs, the extraordinary hike right out the door, the incredibly well appointed kitchen, the wood burning stove. If you want to experience the true beauty of Skye, and all the mighty weather it will show you, there is no better place to rest your head and breathe…!
