Invited to a special birthday party and subsequent dinner by friends who live in the U.S., I flew over from Italy after visiting family, deciding that this would be the perfect time to see a little of Greece. I have always wanted to go to Greece, but always end up staying longer in Italy. The invitation offered the perfect opportunity. We flew to Thessaloniki from Santorini. There is only 1 direct flight, so we opted for that 5:15 flight rather than suffer a 3-4 hour wait at Athens airport. The flight was only 1 hour. I knew nothing about Thessaloniki and where to stay and began by checking out the area where our hosts were lodging. Most of the guests were staying near the white tower, but I liked the descriptions of a few hotels and narrowed down my options. If you like modern, this neighborhood and hotel are not for you; but, I loved it, because I love history and the price was very reasonable.
The Capsis Bristol is a boutique hotel with a spacious lobby, a reception area and an elevator that takes you to the upper floors. The area is perfect for dining and enjoying the cuisine for which Thessaloniki is renowned. The neighborhood is hopping in the evening, but our room was quiet, despite the outside merriment. There are lots of good restaurants, tavernas and bars. In fact, our friends' held the second event, a traditional Greek dinner in a taverna across the street!
It is within walking distance to the center of town and not too far from the archeological museum.
This hotel was a post office during the Ottoman Empire. When you enter the lobby you feel as if you are stepping back in time, replete with period furniture, rugs, gramophones. The breakfast buffet was very good-pretty standard for all of the hotels in which we stayed during our time in Greece. It was tasty and plentiful and we could eat indoors in a small seating area or outdoors. The room was very comfortable. There was a small balcony off of the bathroom which looked over the quaint street.
Be careful of the safe. It does not work the same way as most room safes and if the alarm goes off, you will need to call the front desk to reset the lock.
The hotel arranged for a transfer service from the airport, at my request, but we wasted 40 minutes awaiting the taxi, despite the intervention of the hotel clerk. The car service had left me a message in Greek. I only speak about 30 words in Greek and was lost. I called the hotel several times and they told me to stay where I was, but I later discovered that pick-ups were not allowed at that point. The car service could have provided better service, although when we finally connected with our driver, he provided a good ride to the hotel. I would suggest just catching a cab upon arrival.
