We had such a lovely stay The Anvil, and were made to feel really welcome even before we arrived!
... We had a 5hour drive to get there, and were hungry and tired on arrival. Knowing we didn't have long before the kitchen closed we ordered some food and the staff were so patient and were very happy to show us to our room once we'd had something to eat.
Our dinner was gorgeous (fish and chips with mushy peas, tartare sauce and curry sauce!) and they had a great selection of non/low-alcoholic beers and ciders which we appreciated.
The room was perfect for us, a good size, plenty of space and very clean and really comfy. The bathroom was great and had everything we needed.
As The Anvil is such as old building, the walls were thick and it was really quiet - we loved our stay.
Breakfast was fantastic! We ordered off a menu the evening before, and it all arrived really promptly when we sat down in the morning.
We stayed for two nights and honestly, we loved it.
The only teeny tiny thing, is that our bathroom was not ultra luxury/glam - but honestly - this wasn't even a downside really as I felt we had great value for money, felt so welcome and loved all the character of the old building.

Check in was un inspiring. No hello, how are you, have you come far? Just given a breakfast pre order form and shown to the door of my room. The room was very small, in fact you had to mind your head when getting in and out of bed because of the sloping ceiling. Same in the toilet when using the toilet and the bath. There was a handheld shower which when it was turned on, the pressure was so much that water sprayed everywhere, they need a shower screen or curtain. The toilet seat was broken and was a challenge to sit on! Broken sleep as there was something like a bird or mouse scratching away for most of the night in the ceiling. Breakfast was mediocre. Greeted by a morose and uncheerful member of staff. The hash browns could have been used for doorstops and the veggie sausage was coated in leather! The poached egg must've been laid by the smallest chicken in the world. I had to relieve someone else's table for salt, pepper and sugar as they had forgotten to put any on mine. Best thing about it was the cafetier coffee.
