Before arrival the manager let us know that there were issues in our room with the aircon, and they were getting it replaced by 4h30pm. No worries, we were going to explore the city anyway.
When we arrived, we got a delicious welcome drink, a short tour in which they showed us the room, and we could walk around the property a bit, it truly beautiful. Then we headed out.
When we got back around 5h00 they let us know that unfortunately the aircon company didn't manage to install the aircon, as they didn't have enough staff on hand to do it safely.
But we needn't worry, because they had arranged with the manager of the Bawa trust that we could stay in Geoffrey Bawa's own residence, where they recently added a second suite in what used to be his old office.
I don't think I can overstate how big of a deal this is, they could've easily booked us in another hotel down the road, but wanted us to experience Bawa's architecture properly, so they gave us a night in an architectural pilgrimage site.
In short, we only experienced De Saram shortly, and it was beautiful, but the absolute standout was how kind & caring the staff was, and how far out of their way they went to share Bawa's beautiful architecture with us.
We'll have to come back to get the full De Saram experience, but that's not really a downside!

What a treat to stay in a villa designed by the late Geoffrey Bawa. The property was beautiful, with a spacious and comfortable master bedroom. The staff were incredibly welcoming and kind, which made our stay even more enjoyable.
We only wish we could have stayed longer, but it was the perfect place for our final night before departure.

This is an amazing property and it was a privilege to stay a night in this Geoffrey Bawa designed house. I was also lucky to do a tour around the property. I was personally involved in one of Geoffrey Bawa projects (construction of Sindbad hotels, Kalutara) where I had the unique opportunity of participating at project meetings with the man himself.
Another thing that I liked were the people who looked after the property as they were humble and attended to my needs very promptly. They acted very professionally.
I have seen some negative comments re the age of the property and not in good level of upkeep etc., and found those comments completely unfounded and baseless. The property was very clean.
