Let the oceanfront, gated retreat of Hilo Shangrila envelop you, with its private saltwater pool, hot tub, and covered lanai, all just a stone's throw from the peaceful Pacific. New air conditioning has been added in all bedrooms for total guest comfort. We are constantly upgrading our home with guest comfort in mind! Situated in the quiet, rural Hawaiian Paradise Park neighborhood, the home beautifully accommodates six guests. Hilo Shangrila's airy, inviting living room and well-equipped kitchen feature soaring ceilings and a wall of glass doors to maximize ocean views and indoor-outdoor living. The home also boasts a dining space for six in full view of the ocean, an office space and additional sitting area, and a laundry area. The master bedroom at Hilo Shangrila offers more vaulted ceilings, a king-size bed, a walk-in closet, and an ensuite bath with a walk-in shower. The welcoming guest bedroom also has high ceilings and a queen-size bed, as well as its own full bath just steps away, with a large tub and shower. The third sleeping area is adjacent to the master bedroom and has a pull out sofa. The saltwater swimming pool has a breathtaking view of the brilliant blue Pacific. Its surrounding lanai provides the opportunity to soak up the warm Hawaiian sun or lounge in the shade. A covered hot tub is the perfect setting for enjoying cooler evenings, and a gas barbecue grill creates another option for meals at home. This is our second stay, but certainly not our last. We have some very specific "wants" for our Hawaiian holiday. Single story, private pool, oceanfront, doesn't cost us an arm and a leg...and Hilo Shangri La provides all of this. It is a funky, Hawaiian beach house and we love it. Due to airline schedule changes we had to make numerous changes to our reservation and every interaction was positive and fun.

Our stay at Hilo Shangrila was everything we were hoping for and then some. The view out back is one that never gets old, and it left us awe-struck every day. Communication was thorough and timely. The home itself was extremely clean and as listed. The pool and hot tub combination was also great and both extremely clean. If you're looking for a peaceful slice of paradise, you won't be disappointed. While I'm not sure if our travels will bring us back to Hilo, I couldn't imagine staying anywhere else after our experience here - we're still talking about it even after returning home! Many thanks for making this available for our family to enjoy as a very memorable experience.

The following maintenance issues were sent to the Concierge on Wednesday 7/19/2023: The door and window in the dining room were "frozen shut". (Confirmed by Gary) With no circulating air and no AC in that room we could not dine there comfortably.The oven was very dirty and some pans underneath weredirty/rusted and unusable (Confirmed by Gary with photos.) Some knives and utensils had rust on them. One of the microwave oven lights is out. Gas from the grill lite once but wouldn’t light again. The second tank is rusted all over and does not look safe. The metal grill cover is loose and falling off. (No one came to assist in repairs). We had to fry our fish rather than grill it. The hot water knob in the main shower is loose and ready to fall off. The LG remote control for the AC in the master bedroom does not work. We were expecting a 5 star experience but our experience was far less than that. It would be appropriate to receive a partial refund as we did not get what we paid for.

The house is on an amazing ocean front lot and we loved spending time by the pool. At the end of the street is an amazing area where the water meets the rocks. The neighbors on either side have a lot of deferred maintenance on their properties so you have to be able to line of put blinders on and look straight out to the rocks and ocean. It is quite a drive from the airport so be prepared and stop for groceries as you drive through Hilo. It’s a long way back.

This place has a feel of old Hawaii- a drop dead gorgeous piece of property. You look out the windows and see the pool and beyond it is the Pacific Ocean with its nonstop waves. We ate outside at the patio table every evening. I swam in the pool once or twice a day. The house is architecturally interesting and so lovely. It had everything we needed. I am totally flummoxed by the negative review. This place is wonderful. It makes the condo we are now in on the other side of the Big Island disappointing.

Stayed in this location 4-years ago, and things have definitely gone downhill. Maintenance of home doesn't seem to be a top priority. Cleaning fee, but when we arrived we found litter outside(used bandaid, straws, etc). Inside the toilet had obviously not been cleaned. Refrigerator died in the first 24-hrs after we arrived. We notified the management team, but it took more than 24-hrs for a replacement, causing the loss of food that we had purchased. We were reimbursed for the loss of food and given $18 for the inconvenience, but not reimbursed for having to eat out during this time. Vrbo was of no use at all with the issue. Not the best way to start a vacation. Location is beautiful and as described.

The ocean is literally in your backyard, making it easy to relax and fall asleep to the sound of the waves. The pool was a great size, well maintained, as well as the hot tub. The house has all the amenities you could need, making it very easy for us to cook meals. Location is perfect for exploring Hilo side of the island, including Pahoa, Waipio Valley, and Volcano National Park. Will definitely stay again!

From the moment we arrived we were amazed. The house has an unbelievable back yard and view. It is located around 30 minutes from Hilo, 40 minutes from Volcano National Park, and under 2 hours from Kona. The grounds are well kept and we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. We would go back 100 times over! It honestly kind of ruined our stay on Oahu after we left Big Island just because of how amazing the house and island were!

We rented this property based on the location and the pool. The pool was so cold we did not swim at all. It was supposed to be partially solar heated but there were no solar heating equipment at all. We paid extra for a place with a pool but the pool was not usable. I would not come back..

This house was everything we could need while on the Hilo side of Hawaii. We have stayed before COVID and house was down the street from here, but not near as nice. Would stay again in a heartbeat! Easy to find in the dark and comfortable for everyone with the guest house included.

Anyone who books this house is booking it for the pool and view, and this aspect of the house did not disappoint! The private pool with the expansive view is a treat. There are 4 loungers. We had very unfortunate weather, but the hot tub helped because we would just into the pool and then warm up in the hot tub. There are no lights in the pool for night time. The house itself is very functional. It is old but cozy and the Hawaiian decor gives it a vacay vibe. The location of the house is quite far from any sort of action.. but that is just being on the Hilo side of the island. We had one major issue with this rental- the beds. The ‘mattresses’ are so so bad. They (all 3) are so soft. They reminded us of blow up air mattresses you use camping where you sink 1/2 a foot into the ‘bed’, and each night your back gets more and more sore. We couldn’t understand why a rental would choose SUCH a soft mattress? Why not something more neural. It’s 3 days later and my husband and I are still talking each day about how sore our backs are, and we are in our mid 30s. Those are the worst beds of any rental I’ve ever experienced.

The Hilo Shangrila is an amazing vacation rental. The house is located in a quiet neighbourhood about a 30 minutes drive from Hilo. Everything was very clean and well maintained. The labelling of light switches and kitchen cupboards made it very easy to find the right one.
The property manager was very helpful and quick to respond with questions or problems we had.
The waterfront pool combined with the ocean view was fantastic. From the pool we could observe turtles in the ocean coming up for air.
Only the bedrooms are equipped with AC but the rest of the rooms have ceiling fans.
I will always remember this place, because I got engaged here.

We absolutely loved our stay at Hilo ShangriLa. Everything was as described. The home is very comfortable and well stocked. The weather was cooler and rainy for part of our stay, so we didn't make a lot of use of the pool, but the hot tub was perfect. Watching the waves by the pool was incredible. We saw several sea turtles riding the waves and the sunrises/sunsets are breathtaking. Communication was excellent. We saw some amazing things on the island, but justsitting on the patio watching the waves was a highlight of our vacation. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again if we had the opportunity to return.

A completely amazing location to stay away from tourist crowds and relax. Fully ocean front on a short rocky cliff, the views in the morning with the cool breeze all day long were delightful. We could have stayed hunkered down for our entire stay, but it was hard to resist the quaint restaurants and new gourmet market (with live music in the bar) just 7 miles south.

Everything was as-advertised and the ocean front views were amazing! Check in was easy and the house was easy to navigate. The hot tub got alot of use! The only negative was that the pool light didn’t work, so effectively made the pool useless after sunset. Other than that, great experience!

If your objective is to "get away from it all" in comfort and Aloha, this is your place on the Big Island. The detail of the house is on another level: the personal artifacts and house arrangement was extremely thoughtful and complete: you were sharing someone's personal home. The cleanliness was also "on another level"; everything was nicely organized and labeled......everything you think you might need is there (and more !). Complete information on hand: a very detailed and well orgnaized binder offering tons of information in regards to places to dine, things to do etc..

Beautiful Ocean Views
Great outdoor spaces for swimming and relaxing. Lots of pool toys. Pool and hot tub were clean.
Had all of the basic items you would need. Room AC was nice. Clean bedrooms and bathrooms. Ceiling fans and door and windows are a must. Best when there was a breeze.
Small adjacent apartment was great for my parents.
About 20 min. away from a store and gas.
Propane grill was nicely clean and we used it every night.
There were turtles just off shore day and night you could watch. The kids loved this!

We want a quiet place where we can float in the pool and just enjoy the sea and this home meets both of those wishes. We left so relaxed and renewed and are already planning our next year's trip. Salt Water Vacations was so easy to deal with and Shawna texted us the first night after our arrival to make sure we were settled in and to find out if we had any questions. The air conditioner in the second bedroom is very loud, so ear plugs are definitely recommended.

Our vacation to this property was a bit tough. We sadly had a lot of problems. It started to feel more like I was doing a job with how much notifying to the property manager we were having to do. The grill was crumbling apart at the legs due to salt water deterioration. Which isn’t anyone’s fault however it nearly fell on my husband while we were grilling our food! Luckily he didn’t get burned but we have a small child and all in all it was a hazard. Not to mention accident waiting to happen! They definitely knew of the issue as there were man made stickers on it identifying warranty and other things! We had no hot water for over 24 hours or water pressure! The cable did not work the entire time of our stay which was hard with a young child and none stop rain. Nobody came to fix this issue either even after ample messages asking for assistance and updates. Come to find out after following ALL the instructions given the guests prior to us had disconnected cables so nothing could work! I was able to take pictures to show the property manager however nobody came to assist us. We at one point we’re thinking we would just leave and go rent a place at a resort but it just seemed like a hassle, waste of money! The outdoor pool and view of ocean were great. House is okay, very dated and smelled of urine in the pantry. It’s hard to keep things dry in that area, I do understand that. However it was not a relaxing stay. Constant things not working from lights to the water issue. They did come fix the water however it still was not heating up or getting pressure. Then my husband found a hose outside just running! Started flooding the driveway and we were able to turn it off then everything seemed to work correctly! Again, was like a job. I feel bad writing this review, I wasn’t going to review the property because I’m not comfortable leaving a negative review but they kept emailing me to do so.
