The atmosphere is truly authentic and unique - it feels like staying in a beautiful historic Zanzibar house rather than in a conventional hotel. The service was excellent, warm and very attentive.
We stayed in the Crystal Room, which was full of character. We especially loved the four-poster bed with its canopy, and the bathroom was absolutely unique and beautifully designed.
Breakfast was generous and served on the rooftop, with a wonderful view over the rooftops of Stone Town. The location is also excellent for exploring Stone Town on foot.
The breakfast was very good, but the selection was almost the same every day.
Our Crystal Room was on the third floor, and the stairs could feel a little exhausting, especially after a full day walking around Stone Town. As this is a historic house, there is no lift.

The hotel is beautifully styled, with authentic Zanzibari architecture, intricate décor and a charming aesthetic that makes you feel immersed in the history of Stone Town. Every corner is thoughtfully designed and full of character.
The atmosphere is calm, peaceful and intimate, making it a lovely place to escape the bustle of the city.
The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the rooftop evening dinner. The food was outstanding, showcasing delicious local flavours, and the live entertainment created a magical atmosphere. Watching the sunset over Stone Town while enjoying dinner made for a truly memorable experience and was one of the highlights of our trip.
The staff were welcoming and attentive throughout our stay, adding to the warm, authentic feel of the hotel.
If you appreciate history, culture, beautiful design and one of the best rooftop dining experiences in Zanzibar, Emerson on Hurumzi is a wonderful choice and well worth a visit.
At times it did feel a little quiet and lacking in energy, but that also adds to its relaxing charm. If you’re looking for a modern luxury resort, this may not be the place for you

The staff are lovely and very helpful
It had its charm being a heritage building
It needs some updating to make it a bit more comfortable. The bed was very hard! And the street noise kept us awake one night… but the rooms are right on the street and it’s busy.
