It’s a very old hotel with a slow elevator and very small bathroom but very clean.

Great location, staff was friendly and helpful. Not 5 star amenities, but would def stay again.

Our stay here is always amazing here. We love the location. Its an older hotel buts its in great condition.

The location was great. 2 minute walt to the pier and beach. This is a historic building with charm. Room and bathrooms are smaller than expected. No microwave or fridge. Staff was friendly. Parking is by valet only and is an additional cost.

Charming and historic hotel in a great location. Many updates and overall great stay. Important to understand a hundred year old building won’t be like a modern one. Enjoy the stay in historical places.

Hotel was in a great location. Check-in and check-out were easy. The valet was tough as there was only 1 and if they were not there you had to wait for an unreasonable amount of time.

the extra charges were annoying

Great location! So many places were within walking distance. The room was an ample size for three people. The windows opened so we could let the fresh air in. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Definitely plan on staying again next year.

The staff was friendly and the room was clean and comfortable. The location was great though there was a lot of noise from outside the hotel on Friday and Saturday night. It didn’t bother us very much though as we were exhausted and are sound sleepers.

I’m giving a three star rating because:
1. The hotel charges a “destination fee” at checkin. Just bundle this with the cost of the room. I wish these were illegal.
2. The soap dispensers in the shower were empty. This should be a standard thing to check when preparing the room for a guest.
The room itself was basic but comfortable. The location of the hotel is great.

It was a convenient location to shopping and the beach

No frills hotel but nice and clean. Very friendly service and close to the beach.

Clean and friendly, but not for the price paid.

Close to everything we wanted to do in Santa Monica..

Hotel Carmel is reasonably priced for the neighborhood. Great location. Very clean. Nice staff. No pool or other amenities. But a great option if your goal is to be near the fun and out all day!

If you want something close to everything in Santa Monica, you can’t get much better than this place. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the place was clean and well kept. The building wasn’t very soundproof, though, but that’s to be expected with an older building.

Red stains on bed cover.

Extremely disappointed. Booked 3 nights, checked out after the first night and paid a cancellation fee. Room was dirty, shower backed up and toilet took multiple flushes. Sheets were like burlap and the noise outside at 1am was ridiculous.

The price and location of this hotel is great! The service was good. The beds weren’t the most comfortable and the rooms were small. That wasn’t a big deal because we were only there to sleep. The location is perfect! Close to everything! With that being said, you can hear everything that is happening outside. The windows were so thin it was like I had it open. Other than that, I would stay again.

Lovely place, beautiful old building, just seconds from the beach, lots of restaurants and more just steps away.

Staff needs work not all them but some of themselves have attitude.

The room had no couch, which I booked a room with 2 queen beds and a couch. The heater didn’t work, there was no refrigerator. The room was dusty and smelled bad. The floor was bumpy and uneven. The water in the sink was slow to go down. The light switch was a broken piece of plastic. It was very expensive for such a run down room. There was terrible noise in the room above us all night and extremely loud noises outside until about midnight. It was actually the worst hotel experience I’ve had in years.

Very comfortable bed, clean room and property, pleasant staff, and excellent location.

Close to lots to do and easy walk to the beach.

While it’s clear from the photos that the property is old, it needs serious updating. The bathroom needs renovation. The mattress is cheap, as are the bed linens. The carpet and window covering (a broken Venetian blind), and A/C (noisy) need replacing. It’s absolutely not worth the $275 I paid for one night. Dining within walking distance is poor. Lots of closed businesses. The area around the hotel, while not overtly unsafe has lots of unhoused people around. I would not stay there again. That said, it was clean and the staff was accommodating and friendly.

Beware of international fee, which it’s a hotel that takes all people but I’ve never paid that fee before. Convenient location to Santa Monica but scary at night. Also, no parking located at hotel. Parking structure charges more than $25.00 for one overnight stay. Not convenient for parking as there is none but paid parking.
Just due to area, not sure I’d return.

Very old building but well located. No restaurant, we had to move because of plumbing problems but the front desk resolved this well. Don’t expect modern.

Great location. The room was very simple, not much space and very noisy. It was very clean and the staff were all kind and helpful. There was a club next to the hotel that played loud bass filled music until 2am so earplugs are a must.
3.0
Great location but the room was clean , functional but oldish

For the hype of this hotel, the accommodations in this area are misleading. The photos looked pretty standard and modern. However, the inside of the hotel was much older, the hallways and rooms could use updates. One small elevator for the hotel. I booked this place for my elderly parents to stay one night and their room was pretty far from the elevator which was challenging for them. Their room was not as modernized as it appeared in photos. Didn’t feel clean. Very minimal amenities. If I had a another chance of booking them somewhere else for the same price but with more comfortable accommodations for them, I would.

A quaint hotel perfectly located close to the beach, dining and shopping.

I loved this property, great location [ could be a little noisy because of the great location ] . Nice staff , clean and great beds . Showers were a little weak , but overall excellent place to stay if you're visiting Santa Monica .

Not sure why this place has so many good reviews. It’s old, uneven, loud, creaky. Seriously this place is sketch. The floors are uneven, you can hear everything from other other rooms through the vents in the bathroom, which can be entertains but creepy. My room was above a bar that was noisy AF. It’s definitely not the nicest place but for the price it was good I guess. Don’t plan on spending any time in the room and you are fine.

Perfect location by the pier, beach, & downtown Santa Monica. Room & halls are pretty run down. Some front desk staff could barely be bothered to answer questions (others were more friendly).

Best thing it’s the valet guys; amazing service.

Needs updating. Very old. Stairs were very dirty. Receptionist was very nice and happy. Very loud at night.

I loved:
- The location is incredible
- the grand, old-style entrance
...but that's where my positive experience stopped.
It seems as though the hotel doesn't care about you as a person or your experience...it seems to coast on it's good location:
- none of the staff smiles, ever. They answer your questions, do as asked, and are not rude, but they show no interest in actively welcoming you.
- you are almost knocked over by a fruity chemical smell as soon as you walk in the door. Throughout the hotel, there are these chemical smells that do not make it feel clean, it makes it feel like it's covering up poor sanitation and feels unhealthy
- ***the beds, sheets, and pillows are HORRIBLY uncomfortable. The pillows feel like multiple cardboard boxes tied together, and the bed is somehow very uncomfortable. I'm not opposed to a firmer bed, but I woke up with my whole body hurting. Even taking a 1 hr nap on my side, I woke up with my shoulder aching. The sheets are scratchy, but very clean and very neatly made.
- because of the wood flooring in rooms, sound travels very easily. I slept with earplugs/a sound machine so it didn't wake me up, just something to note.
- the decor of the hotel is simple, and clean, but looks like it hasn't been updated, aside from the wood flooring and a coat of paint, since the early 90's
- even the TV in the lobby played the WORST Patrick swazy 80's films.
At every turn, this hotel makes little no effort, yet is still expensive.

Great location. Building is dated

Absolutely horrible place to stay. The front desk seemed incompetent. The information they gave me about parking totally conflicted with the valet attendants. The entire staff seemed dishonest about parking. The cable did not work. The front desk had a negative attitude during check-out. They seemed to be in a bad mood about something. Maybe they are not morning people. Maybe they should be moved to night shift.
