You need to distinguish between 2 things here: the building itself, and the apartment inside where the room is located.
The building is completely neglected and dirty, but the apartment itself is well-kept. The contrast is so night and day that it’s shocking. In fact, once you’re inside the room (or even the apartment), you completely forget about the building. I spent 3 comfortable and restful nights here.
The room is good:
- clean
- comfortable bed
- a small balcony
- a private toilet and shower.
The room is located inside an apartment which has several rented rooms (the kitchen sits right in the middle and it´s the spot where the staff desk is). That said, it still feels like home, just as if you were in a regular hotel room, even with other travelers in the same apartment. You keep the keys (1 to your room and 1 to the apartment door) when you go out which is cool.
The young man who checked me in was extremely kind and answered all my questions throughout my stay.
The room faces a very lively street, which stays busy until late in the night, so bring earplugs.
As a landmark if you get lost, you can ask the locals for the restaurant 'Karam el Sham' on 'Sooter' street, which is right opposite the building (and everyone knows Sooter street).
You can easily get around using the white micro-buses right from Sooter street — a great alternative to the standard yellow and black taxis.
There is a bakery just 1-minute walk from the building when you exit to your left, and a small shop selling takeaway coffee (right by the gas station) when you exit to your right (which unfortunately opens a bit late, only at 10:00 AM).
There is no elevator available to guests, so don´t come here with a heavy luggage or backpack.
In the bathroom, after you take a shower, a little water stays on the floor and doesn't drain on its own, you have to squeegee the floor to push the water away.

I really liked the guys working there, especially Umar, who studies history, like I did.
I like the old building the hotel is in.
There is a ceiling ventilator, not an air-conditioning, but it worked really good.
The room is nice, and even more so the toilet.
I like the surroundings. If you go towards the centre (the cathedral), on the left, very close, you have a shop with fruit and another with very nice local sweets. And if you, very close to the hotel, turn left, in a small street that has a small mosque, there is a very nice local street food for really low prices, and quite delicious. Try broad bean ("fool") sandwitch and pickles :). It is silly money, and worth trying.
I had some trouble with the elevator.

Very central location, which made it easy to explore Alexandria. The room had a beautiful decoration and a lot of character, and we really appreciated having our own private bathroom. The staff were extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful throughout our stay.
The room had a ceiling fan, but air conditioning would have made the stay much more comfortable. There was some noise from the traffic and constant honking outside, although after visiting Cairo we realised Alexandria wasn’t actually that bad! The staff were present in the kitchen/common area almost 24 hours a day, just outside our room, which sometimes made the accommodation feel a little less private. Some minor maintenance and renovation would also improve the property.

I stayed for one month. Close to the Bibliotheca,, spotless clean and no insects. Staff working from 8 to 4 are great people to meet with and do a brilliant job, too.
The kitchen which apart from the large fridge is not usable, doubles as the reception hall with ALL rooms emerhing from it. Staff working day shifts are brilliant but the noise from phone use (movies, phone calls) and snoring at night remains a huge problem and apparently couldn't be solved within the four weeks period of my stay. Huge crowds of aggressive and howling dogs make the area unsafe at night. Being located at the 4th floor means that Amazon does not deliver as the service is too lazy, unless, perhaps, you pay Amazon only upon delivery. Its a student area (Faculty of Law) so restaurants cater to this clientel, good restaurants are 1km away, supermarkets even further. Bathroom appliances are completely out-dated which means that two thirds of the water I used was actually wasted. Huge disappointment in a desert country.
