The location was lovely. Saw lots of rabbits, ducks, deer, and squirrels, which the kids loved. The swimming pool was easy to access and very clean. The staff were super friendly (other than at checkout). Accommodation itself, no complaints. It was clean and beds comfy. We cooked every night and had no issues with the kitchen equipment. We had Tesco deliver a food shop which was super handy.
The jacuzzi wasn’t great. It wasn’t very warm and there’s no temperature setting so we only ended up using once out of the 4 days. One of the showers was super hot, no matter what way you turned the knob, it didn’t change! The lady who checked us out was quite rude. Informed me that check out was at 9am even though booking.com states it’s at 10am. A 9am check out is way too early and something I’ve never heard of!

The pool and gym are included in a lodge stay.
Cleanliness - during our first night we found a toy and deflated balloon next to one of the beds. There was a significant build up on dust in places, mould in the showers, limescale in the toilets and debris in the hot tub.
Showers - the lodge had two showers and neither had adjustable temperatures. One was boiling hot and the other tepid. Maintenance came and adjusted the temperature, but still neither could be adjusted using the dial in the shower.
Hot tub - debris in the hot tub and what looked like a film across the top. We didn’t use it.
Other - no wooden spoon or anything to stir with if you’re cooking. The hob rings aren’t easily adjustable. The mirror and windows were smeared. The TV remote was broken. The salt and pepper shakers were empty. The cutlery and mugs were mismatched. There were four placemats but only one coaster. I think advertising the lodges as ‘luxury’ is a mistake. None of these things are difficult to put right.
I contacted The Essex after our stay and their response didn’t reassure me that any of the issues had been resolved. They just told me I should have provided them with a breakdown of all the issues when we were there.
To be clear, the main issues were raised at the time (the showers and the initial issues with cleanliness) but I personally don’t feel it is for a guest to provide an itinerary on where the lodge could improve during their stay. It’s basic housekeeping and maintenance. It’s a shame that more accountability wasn’t taken, as these are hugely difficult fixes.
