Cold house, awful sleep, mouldy shower curtain, absurd extra costs. Absolutely would not recommend.

Communication with the host was the only positive of our stay. He is very responsive and was relatively flexible in accommodating our arrival and departure times, which we appreciated.

Terrible experience, absolutely not recommended. The mattresses and pillows are appalling - the single bed was completely impossible to sleep in, forcing me to spend both nights on the couch (and I am a heavy sleeper who normally adapts easily). The general cleanliness on arrival was poor, but the standout was the bathroom - with my exception (out of necessity), none of us used the shower due to a worn out shower curtain, with clearly visible mould at the bottom. The house is extremely humid, poorly insulated, and very cold (we stayed there in December, but I'd imagine that it gets really hot in the warmer months). On arrival, the indoor temperature was 13°C... As if this were not enough, the list of additional charges is remarkable. On top of the rental price, guests must pay 10 EUR per person to rent bedsheets (BEDSHEETS!) and towels, 80 EUR for cleaning, plus the heating costs. While these fees were communicated in advance, that does not make them reasonable. Charging separately for bedsheets — and for heating in winter — is borderline absurd and certainly not common practice almost anywhere. All in all, it’s a real shame. The house is in a nice location if you know where you’re going—Castell’Anselmo is essentially in the middle of nowhere, so I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone without a car or looking to stay near a city centre. It could have been a lovely, quiet retreat in the Tuscan hills, but that potential is completely wasted due to poor maintenance, lack of care, and unjustifiable extra costs. We certainly would not return or recommend it to anyone.
