I've been going to Green Gables for nearly a decade and similar hotels before that. It used to have a lot more facilities in use - lounge, library, breakfast room, bar and swimming pool, lift - but these have gradually closed and the cost of staying has probably got cheaper even as everything else has become more expensive!
It's definitely showing signs of wear and tear and can be musty but remains full of charming features and character ... It's still an extremely grand building with beautiful architecture, tiles, a piano and a well resourced games rooms.
I've recently stayed in a lot of different cheaper accommodation across Europe and you get a lot more provision than a hostel or many basic hotels with free linens, towels, toiletries, generous tea and coffee facilities, a welcoming front desk and a secure private room. Cheaper accommodation attracts a real variety of people (and personally I love meeting new people and having conversations) but generally everyone keeps themselves to themselves here.
It's a half hour walk to the beach front but that means you are undisturbed by the late night karaoke and can enjoy the morning birdsong from the park next door.
If you are the kind of person who is looking for something 'modern' then this is not the place for you but if you want the feel of budget British holidays with an aesthetic up to the 1980s this will be a treat.
There were no spoons in my room for making tea and coffee... Recommend bringing your own spoons just in case!
