The hikes and hot springs were great, everything else was meh. The food was average by Japanese standards, the once grand hotel had seen better days, and the staff was less than gracious. For example, we arrived 20 minutes early on a rainy day after a long hike up Mount Kintoki. They refused to check us in, even though the hotel seemed empty. Instead of letting us relax in the lobby, they ushered us to front room, where we were required to buy drinks and food we did not want. In checking out, I had misplaced the check for my shoes and the first reaction was "that will be a charge." I found the check and got out of there after an unhelpful (and somewhat curt) exchange about choosing different routes back to the train station. I'm sure there are better places to stay while visiting this magical place.

This is a lovely property. We had a large corner room with a nice view. A good sized living room as well as the bedroom. The kaiseki dinner was excellent and the wait staff were helpful and polite. The onsen was hot at 44.5 deg and it relaxed me after a day of touring.

This is a lovely property. We had a large corner room with a nice view. A good sized living room as well as the bedroom. The kaiseki dinner was excellent and the wait staff were helpful and polite. The onsen was hot at 44.5 deg and it relaxed me after a day of touring.

Everything about this property is outstanding from the gorgeous gardens and the comfortable onsen to the helpful staff and convenient location with shuttle into town. The food was some of the best we experienced during our visit to Japan. Our room (in the main building) was exquisite. We appreciated the efforts to respect and highlight the building’s history.
