The Old Mill Hotel

Stunning location. Lovely rooms and fab landlady. Perfect weekend away

We could hear everything from every room. However it's an old building and cant be helped

The Old Mill was one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in in England. Our hostess was wonderful, and our rooms overlooked a small river and pond with rushing water that soothed me to sleep each night. We ate a great fried breakfast in the downstairs pub each morning, and had several dinners there as well. Our hostess even helped me identify a bird we saw on one of our walks. I would go back in a flash.

The weather was a bit too hot. But what can you do? We had a fan in each room that helped a lot.

The room was well appointed and clean. The location was fantastic - it's a lovely 15 minute stroll from the city centre along a peaceful tow path. The building is very characterful and set in picturesque surroundings.

Service was a mixed bag. The lady who checked us in seemed unimpressed that we had arrived just as her shift was ending and passed us on to someone else halfway through without running through basics such as the wifi code and breakfast times. It didn't leave a great first impression. Some of the bar staff didn't seem to have been trained particularly well and it felt quite disjointed at times. We ordered a pint of lager and a glass of prosecco, I was served a pint of Jubel and the prosecco was lukewarm as the bottle hadn't been chilled. The breakfast was poorly cooked and overpriced.

Staff were excellent, food was lovely and room was great, location fantastic. A lovely view overlooking the pond. Very handy for Salisbury races too!

I phoned the day before to ask if I could check in an hour earlier than the norm as we were going to the races. I was told that they need to check with housekeeping and would call me back. They never did. Arrived at the hotel the hotel and again asked if an early check in was possible as nobody had got back to me. The young lady said she was aware of our request and needed to check with housekeeping. No problem, we had a very nice lunch then at 2pm I again asked if we could check in again to be told by the same young lady that she needed to check with housekeeping! 15 minutes later she comes back and tells us we can check in. Great, so of we go to the reception, check in 45 minutes earlier than the normal check in time and were then told that we had to pay a £15.00 early check in fee!!!! Absolute liberty, at no time was this ever mentioned not at the time of booking or when I asked for early check in. In forty years of using hotels across the world I have never been charged to check in early. After paying £144 and spending over £70 on lunch this was an insult. Also the parking is a joke, the car park has 12 spaces none of which are reserved for hotel guests so we had to park up the road. A shame because the hotel and bar staff are great.
