The food was spectacular!
I thought we had our own private onsen, but it wasn’t the case. We went to book for a private onsen but there was no availability. So that was disappointing.

the service is good. they explain each dish in english. meals are value for the buck. last day, train was suspended due to heavy rain and they offer shuttle bus all the way to hakone yumoto.
the onsen could be better maintained. u can see algae and spider web though it should be frequently used as there is no shower in the room so this is the only place to bathe. no lift. stairs a bit steep.

Traditional room for an authentic experience. The staff were all very accommodating and friendly. The dinner and breakfast meals were tasty. There is a free shuttle to and from Gora station (it is a steep walk without).
This hotel should have some renovation. The rooms, corridors and especially the Onsen are very old and out dated. We paid for the private Onsen room but it was not worth the additional fee. It is only a single bath tub in a small room. There is no ‘wow factor to it’. in summary, given the quality of the hotel, the price is unreasonable.

The location is great, just around the corner from the Gora cable car station and transfer to the ropeway. The staff are all very friendly and helpful - I don't know much Japanese, but most of the staff understood some English and couldn't do enough to help us. But the view is the biggest reason to recommend this ryokan; looking out of our window over the mountains was amazing.
You will need to hire an onsen if you want private access, and some of the photos of the onsen on here are things I didn't see at the ryokan. That said, it's excellent value for money for the location and the level of service.

The room was a little dirty with webs on ceiling

The dinner and breakfast experience was amazing - so beautifully presented and curated. The onsen was also great!
It was an expensive stay and yet the rooms werre filthy - mould on the walls and the hand basin in the toilet was very dirty.

To be fair, I didn’t like much. it’s well located next to Souzan station. however, you should note that from Odawara to there via public transport, it’s a 2h+ trip.
I booked through this website with breakfast but without dinner. I sent them MULTIPLE messages months and weeks in advance asking about booking dinner separately. They confirmed this via massage here, but when I arrived there they told me I didn’t have dinner booked and there was nothing I could do. I showed them the messages and assured it was some miscommunication issue, but they were vehement. In fact, the person at reception became super rude and almost humiliated me telling me “No, there is no dinner, final answer, don’t you understand?” to which I said “got it, understood, but we are now in the middle of a mountain, main city centre is 2h away, what should I do for food? where should I go?” to which they condescendingly said “up to you” giving me the shoulder. I was asking for recommendations of where to buy something or of a nearby place, but instead of giving me instructions or offering to make me a reservation somewhere else, they basically left me to fend off for myself. I went to the station - there were no restaurantes there - and basically bought some souveni sweets and that was my dinner. I could overlook that and put it up to miscommunication and maybe them not understanding English very well (it was clear that they weren’t used to foreigners, everything was written in Japanese only and they had trouble understanding me), but the place was also very old and moldy, I could hear everything from the other rooms and at one point a server got into my locked room without knocking first while I was getting dressed to offer me breakfast. For the price, it’s is supper disappointing and you can find better ryokans in Hakone.

If you're looking for what a traditional antique ryokan is, look no further. This place is definitely old, but with that age comes character. If you want a more modern stay you're going to need to look elsewhere. What it lacks because of age it makes up for in the incredibly friendly staff and delicious food. The woman who attended us for our meals was super nice and set everything up beautifully. She did not speak much English but sincerely made an effort to communicate with us. We didn't know what we were eating, but honestly didn't need to. It was all so delicious! My husband and I also took advantage of a private onsen. The bathroom itself was relatively small but that bath was GLORIOUS! After waking roughly 10 miles every day for half a week prior, it was so refreshing to soak. The water was hot and milky in color and left our skin feeling so smooth.
This ryokan is also 2 or so minutes from the ropeway and end line of the cable car. If you get a chance, I highly recommend getting there by the Tozan train then cable car as the views are beautiful. I recommend this ryokan if an older building isn't off-putting, as I really do think that the rest of the experience far outweighs the age of the building and the fact that things clearly need repair in areas.

this is a 100% traditional stay, the baths were incredible and very well taken care off. the hotel is located 3 minutes from the station so getting around the mountain is very easy. super recommended if you want to live a full japanese experience!

The location & hot spring baths were nice! Staff was very friendly as well.
The building is so old that the rooms and hotel smell horrible - it gave me a headache and I really couldn’t get over the smell during my stay. The staff didn’t really speak any English, so if you’re a traveler, it doesn’t make sense to go here as I didn’t understand what I should be doing, what my meals were, etc (even though they were perfectly friendly)!
It’s just as expensive as any other ryokan in the area, so if you’re going to spend that much money, I imagine there are much better ryokans for that price. I didn’t find this experience worth the cost and unfortunately was eager to leave in the morning.
They really need to do some renovations to the building and find a way to improve the smell in the rooms and baths, it made the building feel very dirty.

The ryokan kept its rustic, traditional look and the staff, despite dressing in modern attire, felt like a family. The hospitality of the staff was absolutely phenomenal.
The private onsen felt badly maintained compared to the gender splits ones. It was small and had no open air section.

Staff was friendly
Good dinner/breakfast
Outdoor onsen was nice
Private onsen was very dirty/scruffy. We paid 3600¥ for 50 minutes and after 10 minutes we left, because we felt uncomfortable. The public onsens are very nice though.
The house is a little old, so sometimes it had a weird smell.
No shower in the room.

Good sized room and decent meals. The staff members were very friendly. Two onsen both with outside baths. It rained very heavily from the point we arrived all through the night but Hakone is the views of the mountains and the pitter-patter of the rain were exactly what we had been looking for. An authentic experience.
There was a slight smell of mildew but the building is about 60 years old so this is probably unavoidable. My wife wants me to add that the toilet wasn’t as clean as she would have liked with mould in places that could have been cleaned. The building has definitely seen better days, but it didn’t really bother me.

Experience of Japanese atmosphere and style, natural onsens.
Staff (except administrator) didn't speak English at all, so it was hard to understand what they wanted from us. I also didn't like that there were no tips and explanations about how to eat Japanese kaiseki meal and use room facilities, so without basic knowledge about Japanese culture it's no sense to visit this Ryokan.

I like the onsen
