We are a family of six who stayed at Storytellers Retreat from July 20 to August 3, and it was, without a doubt, the nicest place I have ever stayed.
From the very beginning, the experience was exceptional. Carlos, the owner, answered every question I had, starting back in January when I was researching places to stay. He is kind, patient, knowledgeable, incredibly supportive, and always quick to respond. His genuine care for his guests is evident from the moment you book untilj the day you leave.
The property itself is an absolute dream. As beautiful as the photos are, they still don’t do it justice. It is even more stunning in person. The home is spacious, peaceful, and thoughtfully designed, giving everyone plenty of privacy. Each of us felt like we had our own personal retreat, with full bathrooms, walk-in closets, and private spaces to relax and unwind.
Every detail has been lovingly curated. The décor is beautiful, featuring unique regional pieces, local artisan soaps, and thoughtful touches throughout the home. The house is also exceptionally well stocked—you’ll never have to worry about running out of essentials.
The location couldn’t be better. It’s perfectly situated within walking distance of everything downtown, including charming shops, wonderful restaurants, cafés, and convenient mini grocery stores.
The beds and pillows are unbelievably comfortable, making for some of the best sleep we’ve ever had while traveling. Every room has air conditioning, which made our stay incredibly comfortable, even on the warmest days.
Throughout our stay, Carlos regularly checked in to make sure everything was going well. He kept us informed about local events and activities and offered fantastic recommendations for places to visit and eat. When my husband became sick, Carlos went above and beyond by checking on him and asking if there was anything we needed. That level of kindness and hospitality is something you don’t often find.

The apartment is very centrally located and is walking distance to an array of restaurants and cafes from its doorstep. It’s a big place and could fit a family of 6 easily. It is a well-equipped apartment, everything you could think of (eg dishwasher capsules, spare towels) - they have it. The host is incredibly friendly and helpful. He was super prompt with communication and went the extra mile to get us more coffee capsules when we ran out. We were also greeted by a welcome basket and a personalised note, which is very sweet of them. All in all, it was a very pleasant stay. This made our trip to the Azores very memorable and I would recommend to anyone coming to Sao Miguel.
