Not the private retreat we thought it was & the most distressing hospitality experience - very sad!
Beautiful photographs, a swimming pool and a luxury price tag do not define hospitality. Respect, compassion, empathy and dignity do. Those are the qualities that matter when guests are at their most vulnerable, and, based on my experience, those were the qualities I felt were missing. That is the lasting memory my family will take away from this stay. It is one I wish we had never had.
What has stayed with me is not simply that our family became so seriously unwell. It is how we were treated once we did. We paid over £2,000 for a three-night stay and, the moment checkout approached, every ounce of warmth, respect and hospitality seemed to disappear. Despite going above and beyond to clean the property, keep the hosts informed, offer to pay for a late checkout, an additional night’s stay and even compensate them for any financial loss, I felt we were treated as a problem to be removed rather than as a family in crisis. At no point did I feel seen as a mother trying to care for young children whilst desperately ill herself.
The experience affected every member of our family. It reduced both me and my sister-in-law to tears, left my teenage niece embarrassed and distressed, and has fundamentally changed how I feel about booking holiday accommodation. I have always believed that when something genuinaely unexpected happens, reasonable people respond with understanding and compassion. Sadly, this experience has damaged that belief and has left me far more cautious about trusting future hosts.
I also came away feeling that the level of privacy was very different from what the listing led me to expect. It gives the impression of a secluded countryside retreat. In reality, the property is immediately adjacent to where the hosts live in a caravan overlooking the house with their 40yo son. There were repeated unexpected appearances around the property without warning. Had I understood that before booking, I would not have chosen to stay. It never felt like the private retreat the listing suggested.
Once we became vulnerable, I experienced communication that I found increasingly hostile, dismissive and disrespectful. I felt harassed at a time when we were simply trying to care for desperately ill children. Instead of compassion, I experienced accusations and pressure. It was unlike anything I have encountered from accommodation providers before.
