A lovely quiet introduction to the countryside - the staff are so friendly and they are amazing chefs. There is a fantastic walk up the mountain to the high villages and shrines.
The only downside is it's distance from town and from the main forest walks. Recommend having a car if you're staying longer than a day or two.

Beautiful Ryokan surrounded by peaceful forest! As a party of 7, we booked two bigger family rooms, but those were the only rooms in the building, so it was like having a private inn all to ourselves!
The hearth and shared space was so cool to have in our space. It was fabulous food and such a cool experience seeing the fish being roasted before dinner and having so many local ingredients in the menu. The staff were amazing and so kind. The onsen bath has a different infusion each day and was private for our party to use. It was the perfect peaceful get away from the big city.
While it was perfect for us, it is about a 30 min taxi from town, so be prepared to be immersed in nature. We had our first night, then booked a tour to pick us up for the day the next day before our second night. Because of the location’s remoteness, this was the perfect itinerary for us. No distractions, just nature and time to slow down and relax.

Most gorgeous location ever, 20-25 min taxi from Nagano station, prompt responses from host, extremely reliable and arranged taxi for us next morning, accommodated our diet and prepared one of the most delicious breakfast I’ve had in my life! The bedding was very comfortable as well!
It was too cold outside of the sleeping room. The walk to the bathroom and toilet is all the way across the house and when the hosts left at night, the heat was off in the middle areas of the house and it felt so cold. They advised us when using the bath to turn on the heating 10 min in advance so the water gets hot, but when we bathed in the morning, even when reheating 3 times (for 10 min increments) it took too long and felt cold :(
There were also no room/ home slippers provided to walk across so our feet felt cold. For such high cost per night, slippers should be provided and heat should stay on in all rooms.
We were lucky that there was no one else staying there that night so we didn’t have to share the bathroom or toilet but I imagine that sharing the toilet especially would have been tough if there was anyone else there.
Overall, amazing though.
