About this cottage rental

Nestled in the peaceful village of Valtos in Uig on the Isle of Lewis, our traditional croft house overlooks the vast Atlantic Ocean and the wild beauty of the Hebridean landscape. Surrounded by history, wildlife and some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches in Scotland within walking distance, it’s the perfect place to slow down and experience island life.

Taigh Mòr can comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests, but please bear in mind that this is a traditional Croft house, and we ask that guests are sympathetic to the communal spaces within the home.

Dining together with 10 guests is possible by moving the kitchen table, although it is cosy. The kitchen has always been the heart of Taigh Mòr, a place where for more than a century, family and friends have gathered to share stories, laughter, songs… and perhaps a few drams too.

The kitchen is fully equipped for everything from a simple breakfast to a family feast and will often become the natural heart of the house. The dining table comfortably seats six and can accommodate up to eight.

We hope you’ll embrace the same spirit during your stay. It is part of what makes Taigh Mòr special — a traditional Hebridean home filled with history, character and a wonderfully intimate atmosphere.

Sleeping & Living

The house comfortably sleeps families and groups across four spacious bedrooms. These include a ground-floor king bedroom, a double bedroom and two family rooms, each with a double and single bed. One of the family rooms also has a private en-suite toilet (no shower).

The cosy living room is a lovely place to unwind after a day exploring the island, while the bright porch offers a peaceful spot to enjoy a cup of tea or a dram while taking in the views. The porch also provides a quiet workspace with an additional table and WiFi available.

For rainy-days, there are board games, toys, DVDs and books for guests to enjoy.

Bathrooms

There is one main bathroom on the ground floor with a shower and toilet, but no bath.

Please note that the house currently has one shower in total. This is something we hope to improve in the future, but we feel it is important that larger groups are aware of this before booking.

Outside Space & Storage

Outside, the large garden provides plenty of space to sit back and enjoy the fresh Atlantic air, with a picnic table and benches for outdoor meals.

Guests are welcome to use the large shed for storing bikes, surfboards, fishing rods and other outdoor equipment. The shed also houses an additional fridge and freezer, tumble dryer and even a dart board.

The Spirit of Taigh Mòr

Whether you are exploring the nearby beaches, walking the dramatic coastline, surfing the Atlantic waves, discovering the wild landscapes of Lewis or simply sitting together with a cup of tea and a view, Taigh Mòr offers something wonderfully simple and authentic.

This is a home with history — a place where generations have gathered, stories have been told and songs have been sung. We hope you enjoy becoming part of that story during your stay.

Guests have access to the full house, shed and garden. Please note that the byre beside the house is not available for guest use, and gates should always be kept closed as sheep often roam freely nearby.
