Disappointing Stay – Serious Accessibility Concerns and Poor Customer Service
My stay at the Simply Sonesta in Irvine was extremely disappointing, particularly regarding the hotel’s advertised ADA-accessible accommodations.
Although the room had a clearly visible handicap accessibility placard on the front door, the room itself did not appear to meet the practical needs of someone using a wheelchair. The entrance door was difficult to open while maneuvering a wheelchair, and even more disappointing, hotel staff refused to provide assistance when needed.
Once inside, navigating the room and bathroom was equally challenging. The layout made wheelchair movement difficult, and there were no grab bars or appropriate handholds to assist someone with limited mobility.
Simply placing an accessibility placard on a door does not make a room accessible. Guests with disabilities should be able to rely on hotels to provide accommodations that are safe, functional, and accurately advertised.
To make matters worse, the hotel did not offer breakfast, further diminishing the overall value of the stay.
I expected much better from a hotel that advertises accessible accommodations. Management should seriously evaluate its accessible rooms and provide additional training to staff regarding assisting guests with disabilities.
Accessibility should be a commitment, not just a sign on a door.
