The location was the perfect base from which to explore the surrounding towns and cities of Tuscany and the Val D’Orcia. The views from the terrace and pool were spectacular and the team at La Chuisa was very happy to arrange additional activities - the truffle hunting experience was fantastic.
We arrived on a Sunday night for a three night stay. Having been shown to our room we headed to the terrace for a pre dinner drink where we were studiously ignored by every member of staff (including the owners who were otherwise engaged with a big group of diners). Eventually I went to reception to ask how we could get some attention.
The food was wonderful but the service was inconsistent and impacted the overall experience so we cancelled our dinner reservation for the Tuesday evening. And although excellent, the cuisine and especially the service did not match La Chiusa’s claim to be among the best 10% of restaurants in the world.
Although the bed was very comfy, the room was rather dark and the furniture and furnishings were tired and in need of a refresh.
The bathroom however was a different story altogether. It was very old (research of the giant whirlpool bath dated it to 1992-5) with cracked tiles, very old, and therefore a bit grimy looking loo and basin. It clearly had not been updated for around thirty years.
There was no separate shower, just a mixer tap shower from the bath.
At no point during our stay did any member of staff or the owners introduce themselves or check in to ask if things were ok. They showed no interest in making us feel welcome at all which seemed very odd.
We did have a wonderful few days in Tuscany but this wasn’t amplified by our accommodation sadly.
Overall we wouldn’t recommend La Chuisa for independent travellers. It seems much more geared up to cater to larger American groups who come for cooking classes and organised activities .
