What I really liked about Hotel Mercier was its character. It does not feel like a generic or impersonal hotel; you can really sense the heritage of the building through the décor, the furniture and the overall atmosphere. It has the authenticity and personality of the kind of boutique property I particularly enjoy.
The location and surroundings are also very pleasant, and having a restaurant and breakfast available on site is a nice addition. Breakfast was decent, the bed was comfortable, and overall the room facilities were satisfactory.
The check-in process was modern, quick and easy, which we also appreciated.
The main issue was the lack of service and the feeling that no one was really in charge. The staff seemed insufficiently trained and, although they were very focused on informing us about additional charges, they rarely offered information, recommendations or solutions proactively.
For example, when we arrived, nobody told us that the hotel had a restaurant or that reservations were necessary. When we later tried to have dinner there, we were simply told that it was fully booked. The same happened the following evening, with no real effort to suggest an alternative or help us find somewhere else to eat. More generally, the staff did not seem able to recommend restaurants or useful local addresses.
Breakfast service was also rather average.
The biggest concern, however, was cleanliness and maintenance. The carpets in our room were very dirty and worn, and the same applied to several fabric surfaces and parts of the wallpaper. Some marks on the wallpaper could actually be removed quite easily when I tried cleaning them myself, which gave the impression that these surfaces simply had not been properly cleaned. Overall, housekeeping felt rushed and lacked attention to detail.
Finally, we had an uncomfortable experience in the corridor when we encountered a very scantily dressed person whose behaviour and appearance felt inappropriate for a hotel common area. I cannot comment on the circumstances, but the situation added to the overall feeling that the property lacked supervision.
The hotel has a lot of charm and potential, but the level of service, housekeeping and general oversight did not match the quality or character of the property.

The location was great, the hotel was beautiful , staff were friendly and helpful
On booking.com our room looked nice and bright with big windows. Instead we were given a room that was completely dark, the window looked out to a wall that was so close that almost no natural light could get in. The window also didn’t open (handle removed) we were very hot even with the air conditioning and had no way to get fresh air. We would have paid more for a better room so I wish this had been communicated beforehand. We were also given twin beds (the hotel did say this was a possibility but it just added to the general bad impression) the carpet in our room was extremely stained and dirty and there were no slippers or robes available (again the website did not state there would be but it is expected for the price point) My impression is that the hotel is understaffed, though all the staff were friendly and did the best they could. When we checked in to the hotel just after 3pm there were three other parties waiting to check in and only one person staffing the front desk, you know check in is 3pm, staff the front desk accordingly. I tried to order a coffee at the bar one morning, the nice waiter seemed to be managing the bar and serving all the guests for a busy breakfast all by himself as well as cleaning g and re-setting all the tables. I ended up having to buy a €13 breakfast just so I could serve myself a coffee, I thought I might as well get the cooked breakfast advertised as well since I just paid €13 for a coffee, unfortunately the waiter was so busy he couldn’t get to my table, im assuming my order would have been taken at the table, again perhaps I should have gone to the kitchen section and tried to get served there but I wasn’t going to bother the waiter who already had a lot on his hands and I had been waiting 10-15 minutes at that point that I just took a croissant and called it a day. When we checked out, again the person was alone on the front desk with multiple guests needing their attention.
