Stone Turtle Cabin on Huntress Pond
About this cabin rental
Situated in Barnstead, this attractive cabin for $200 per night is a great choice for your next break. READ CAREFULLY BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO BOOK.... Stoneturtle is a basic cabin with Japanese influences most suitable for young families, individuals and couples wishing to spend a week, or more, pond-side, relaxing, fishing, swimming, boating, barbecuing or reading, writing and painting. I would prefer longer term rentals, minimally one week. In the case of longer rentals I may request a zoom interview, and offer a discount. Stoneturtle is unsuitable for renters looking for hotel-like accommodations or merrymaking. It is also unsuitable for those with restricted physical movement due to the number of stairs leading down to the cabin as well as level changes in the house itself. The rental season begins Memorial Day and extends through the middle of October. Nearby are hiking trails, blueberry picking and historical sites. The cabin is one hour from Lake Winnepasaukee and the White Mountains, an hour and a half from Boston and less than an hour to the sea. An overview of the cabin: The cabin has a compact but fully equipped kitchen, a dining table for four, two small sitting areas indoors and outdoors. The living area is filled with books and artwork. The bathroom has an older shower but a new toilet and hot water heater. Sleeping is on futon mattresses placed directly on the reed-matted tatami floor. Please do not wear shoes indoors and instead bring slippers of extra socks. Absolutely no shoes allowed on the tatami floored rooms. If you are not interested in removing your shoes indoors, then please do not attempt to book a stay. There is no linen or towel laundering services provided so bring your own sheets and towels. Basic materials for cleaning are provided. There is a canoe and a kayak stored under the house with life vests available. There is a picnic table, a charcoal barbecue which must be cleaned before departure and a fire pit. Obtain wood purchased locally at area markets. All trash is taken away by you. It can be brought to the local transfer station on Tuesdays through Saturdays. The transfer station has has strict rules about separating different kinds of trash. If this arrangement is not possible for you, we can discuss an alternative plan and fee. Upon departure be sure all lights are off, windows closed and everything clean and replaced to original location upon departure. Failure to follow the rules will cause you to lose your deposit. This season's stricter requirements for a stay at Stoneturtle House are because of certain recent guests who seemed not to understand the golden rule of vacation home rental sites...that you are a guest in someone’s home...not in a hotel. This property is one where the pictures don't really do it justice. The location on the lake is just beautiful, especially in Fall. Sitting around the fire with an almost private lake in front of us was just calming and the weekend getaway we needed

The property was nicely hidden away on the pond. It was clean and had amazing views from outside and within. Highly enjoyed our stay. Would definitely return. Great place to get away from everything else and disconnect.

An harmonious and authentic stay that will leave you with fantastic memories. Peaceful and calming!

The location and property are very nice, but the house itself is not so much. The kitchen and bathroom are not nice. The kitchen was severely under stocked with cleaning supplies and there was a half of a roll of toilet paper left for us to use. Cooking in this kitchen was a nightmare because it’s very small and there is hardly any room to move around. With a group of more than 2, this is very problematic. However the lake was beautiful and relaxing

My family stayed over the 4th of July weekend at the Stoneturtle Cottage. We felt cozy from the moment we entered the little house and explored the Japanese way of life with day gest originated from Japan. Despite the rainy weather we had a blast. The host was very responsive and very generous. We would love to come back another time.

We enjoyed our stay on Huntress Pond. The cottage, the setting, and the owner far exceeded our expectations. If you want to be in a gorgeous setting with all of the amenities a New Hampshire cottage can provide, this is your place!

Idyllic Getaway
This vacation spot is exactly as described in the listing. The house is well-appointed, beautifully and interestingly decorated. The location on the pond is perfect, with easy water access and a great spot for swimming. Such a relaxing vacation!!

Independence Day on Huntress Pond
Jean-Pierre's home is the coziest property on Huntress Pond. Large pond-side trees provide ample shade and some privacy, while not blocking the view or access to the pond. A set of steps into the water and a small dock provide easy access. There was a giant snapping turtle hanging out around the dock, a few waterfowl and a number of phoebes. Our stay included 4th of July weekend, so the pond was very lively with boat activity (some of it a bit boisterous) and very impressive fireworks displays put on by the neighbors around the pond. The cottage and yard are incredibly comfortable and well equipped for relaxing, reading, napping, working puzzles, etc. The Japanese-style features and decor are labors of JP's love for Japan and add to the over charm of the place. We had a really lovely stay.

We have returned to this cabin for a few years now and it's become such a special place for us to unwind in late summer. The cabin is so well cared for and welcoming. The kitchen offers all the tools you need to get away comfortably. The lake is quiet and while remote, there are plenty of grocery stores in short distance. Jean-Pierre is a fantastic owner and has been so great to work with. Looking forward to next year!

Meditation and relaxation
This was my second year at Stone Turtle House, and it is my peaceful retreat--a small, tidy cabin that can be as off the grid as needed. (I love that there is no TV, though I did bring a bluetooth speaker and some quiet music for myself.) Sipping coffee while looking out over the pond, fishing from the dock (or from the canoe--much better luck at catching bass), floating on the water, reading or napping in the loft, cooking a simple dinner--a perfect way to spend a few days. While other amenities are near by, you can also simply while away the time in this little spot. The cabin is especially suited to meditation and contemplation and has a very peaceful vibe. I will come back again.

The outside of the property was very nice and well maintained, but the inside needs work. There was a musty smell throughout. The bathroom was poor and needs to be updated - we would not use the shower, it was old and had rust. The kitchen is old and small. The description indicated that there were futons to sleep on, but they were just mats to use on the floor. I have had 2 knee replacements and am facing a hip replacement and had I known this, I would not have rented a place where the only option was to sleep on the floor. A futon to me is something that you can sit on and also use to sleep on. The property manager did get us a cot but that was not going to work either so we drove home at night and returned during the day to enjoy the outside. So our two day stay turned out to be a few hours one day and a few hours on day 2 - with a drive home each night. The property manager did offer us an extra day but we had other commitments. Overall it was a very disappointing vacation.

This was our second time staying at the Stone Turtle and was just as relaxing as our previous visit in 2018. As someone who works in Tech, it was great to stay someplace without the internet to truly disconnect and really relax.
The listing does say it is not ideal for young children. We brought our 1 year old who is not yet walking and had no issues, however if she was walking/running around I would agree the space is not ideal.
JP was a tremendous host and was easy to communicate with.

Stone Turtle house vastly surpassed our expectations: the setting is stunning, the house is comfortable gorgeous, and every possible recreational amenity is supplied. We had the absolute best time canoeing, kayaking, swimming, roasting marshmallows, playing croquet, and dining at the picnic table by the pond. and generally relaxing. We have never stayed in such an exquisitely decorated and well appointed rental home. I would give Stone Turtle House 10 stars if I could!

JP was exceptional at getting back to us with answers to all of our questions, and for having everything ready for us (grill, canoe, camp wood, etc) when we arrived.
That, combined with great weather made our stay wonderful.

Oasis on the pond
Our second time staying here and it is such a delight. As others have mentioned, it's a tranquil setting and beautiful cabin. Unlike other cabins, this kitchen has plenty of utensils and dishware, a nice charcoal grill and plenty of tools for cooking. Jean-Pierre was very helpful and responsive. The dogs love it, we enjoy swimming and kayaking, and we look forward to the next stay!
