Wasn't what I was expecting as it's not your traditional hostel but ended up being a great stay! Hamnavoe John O Groats hostel is run by an extremely nice gentleman who's kind, friendly and generous. Has a very cute, well-behaved dog. The facilities were split by a few guests, though this didn't impede on bathroom availability. Also, could see the Duncansby Sea Stacks from my window which was pretty cool. After a long drive up the coast, this place was exactly what I needed.

I got a traditional warm Scottish welcome - Gordon was a very amenable host. I booked the family room and if I'm honest I had trouble getting up in time for checkout - the double bed was exceptionally warm and comfortable. This room had TV, refreshments on a tray, more than enough storage and nice touches like magazines dotted around for some light bedtime reading. Parking was directly outside on the driveway, a vast improvement from my previous night's stay in Inverness... Some might consider the interior/decorations a bit old fashioned but in reality, this place has everything you could want - it exudes character and feels like a home. There was ample space in the room and I think it offers excellent value for the price.
Two very minor gripes - the breakfast was stated in the listing as "continental" when it was just tea/coffee/small box of cereal on offer. And the shower bracket in the "main" bathroom was loose, so the shower head kept falling down.
