"Loved staying here. What a fabulous place. Beautifully restored, along with many other buildings in this unspoilt mountain village. Plenty authentic touches such as the rustic, vintage furniture. Exce..."

arriving at the gorgeous Cameros mountain village Aldeanueva is like stepping back in time, slowing down, breathing in the fresh air and leaving worldly worries far behind. the sounds of a light breeze through the trees, cow bells on the hillside, bird song, the babbling stream merge to create a sense of calm, bucolic harmony. children play, an old lady reads her puzzle book, the church portico provides shade for a dog or two. the Posada is the last house - the street becomes a path to a chapel further up the valley and beyond to ancient smuggler's tracks and wild pasture land. the hosts are welcoming, helpful and kind - and serve a great breakfast, a yummy dinner, good coffee, drinks and snacks on request and all at great value for money. the Cameros area is a hidden gem of a natural park, with walking tracks, monastic buildings, ancient villages and a good road to get to the world beyond - as if you would want to leave.
getting all our luggage from the parking area to the Posada took us quite a few times walking up and down - the wheelbarrow kindly provided could better have been a trolley with four sturdy wheels. but our main gripe was our room: while the hosts' intentions were surely nothing but honourable and kind, the room we were shown into was not what we bargained for: significantly smaller than indicated in our reservation, accessible directly from the common entrance hall (hence noisy at meal times and in the evening), with no sitting area, no writing desk, no space to speak of at all, just room for a double bed and a low cupboard creaking under the weight of our luggage; en suite, a small, windowless bathroom with next to no ventilation. what little view we had of all the beauty outside was through a single, very small window, which when closed stifled the air in the room, and when open let in insects and the clear and present voices of people socialising right outside, until after dark. yes, we had earplugs. and an uncomfortable dog under the bed. our sleep was short, and very uncomfortable. the reason stated for putting us in this room: our dog, as the only other room suitable for pets was already booked by others, apparently. our incredulous rebuttal that we had booked 15 months in advance, clearly mentioning our dog accompanying us, and that all the other rooms are much larger, much more comfortable, and with much more beautiful views resulted in emotional discussions, eventually followed by apologies for the miscommunication - and that was that. we were very disappointed, too tired to demand a refund - and in any case, everywhere else was booked solid for the solar eclipse. our advice: clearly confirm in writing in advance with the hosts that you will expect your room to match the photos and description. we were sad to leave, still.
