This is a great base for exploring the Gora area. Although the accommodation is Spartan it’s clean and the staff are great. The toilets are shared and the two onsen are free to use. The bar opens at 5 with a range of drinks.
There is no restaurant at the property but it’s not a big problem as the cafe just down the road is open from 8am till 4.30pm. Great food for breakfast and lunch. There are several good restaurants nearby

We stayed as a family of 4 in a newly converted building opposite the main hostel. The stay was rustic but really well designed and allowed us great views of Hakone. You are in the countryside so there are obviously bugs and a few creepy crawlies but to be expected. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly and being able to use the private onsen was a blessing with shy teenagers! The hostel is about a 5 minute walk from the station.
Limited breakfast & restaurant options nearby, which took a bit of planning, particularly the breakfast part!

There was an onsen in the building. The train and ropeway station is close.
The building is old, so the facilities are not the best. The walls are thin, so you can hear everything. We stayed close to the stairs, so we could hear every movement from our room. I even noticed some rooms with a huge gap between the door and the ceiling, which compromised privacy as people could see inside from the hallway. Additionally, the lighting was quite weak. There is only one male toilet for around 10 rooms on the 2nd floor. The onsen booking system is not the best; slots get filled very quickly, and 40 minutes is perhaps too long—it would be better to have shorter, more frequent slots. Also, the closest convenience store is a 25-minute walk away.
