The room itself was not particularly large and looked out on the back of the hotel (which is never the best side), but it was well equipped with modern furniture and fittings. We had two single beds which were comfortable and gave a good night's sleep. There bathroom had a large shower and there was plenty of hot water. All the fittings modern and worked well. A good selection of cereals fruit and pastries was provided at breakfast, and there was a range of hot food available including the traditional cooked breakfast plus of course local kippers. The quality of the food was good and appropriate at this price point. A nice touch was that a packed lunch was available on request. Overall the hotel appeared clean and well maintained, and the staff we met (the manager and the housekeeping staff) were friendly and approachable. Despite the problems highlighted in the next section we had a very enjoyable stay and the hotel was in an excellent location at the far end of the promenade near to the Electric Railway terminus. This also meant we could park our car outside for free without the need for a parking disc (which you need for parking in most places around the island).
This is not a criticism, but just a fact of life if you are trying to run a modern hotel in a building put up in the 19th century. There is no lift and the stairs are steep. There's no getting round this. Our room was on the third floor which felt like quite a hike. The other problem we had was that we found it hard to get in the hotel when we first arrived. I had been sent an email (which I hadn't seen) with a code in to open a safe where I could then find the key! I had no wifi (I didn't realise that my UK wifi wouldn't work on the island) and I couldn't get through to either of the numbers given on my booking form. I ended up going in a local pub to get wifi and then saw the email. This would not be a problem if there were any staff on site, but it appeared that the hotel was not staffed at that point. Perhaps this is the new way for hotels to save money, but it left us feeling very frustrated, especially as nowhere on our booking did it tell you that this was how to access the hotel. Another issue which is not the hotel's fault but was a problem none the less was that for two evenings on the run the occupants of the next door room decided to have a full blown 'domestic' on the landing outside our room late in the evening, cursing and swearing at each other. On the first evening this made us feel very vulnerable because we were not sure there were any staff on site.

The booking and checking in arrangements were all excellent as was my room which was compact, clean and tidy and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast arrangements were good whilst the food and drink options were excellent. The hosts were busy, polite and diligent and I would happily stay there again in the future. No complaints.
There was nothing I didn't like. I could say the view from my room wasn't great, but I didn't go there to admire that particular view , rather everything else that the Island had to offer.
