Hotel Metropol in Portorož presents itself as a 5-star destination, and on first impressions, it certainly looks the part. The building appears to have undergone recent renovations, giving it a modern and upscale aesthetic. Rooms are spacious—likely a legacy of the hotel's older structure—and the complimentary upgrade to a suite during our stay was much appreciated. The panoramic views are among the finest in Portorož, offering a striking blend of the Adriatic, the surrounding hills, and the iconic Kempinski Palace, even if slightly marred by the rooftops of the casino complex. The hotel also boasts a generously sized, well-heated indoor pool and a comfortable terrace area. Breakfast was varied and generally very good (bread pudding and baked beans are much better at the Kempinski, though), living up to expectations for a hotel of this class.
Beyond the surface, the experience was marred by a series of service shortcomings that made it difficult to consider this a true 5-star establishment. To begin with, basic service standards were repeatedly missed. There were no spa slippers in the room—something we’ve come to expect as a given in any hotel offering wellness amenities. After requesting them, it took the entire afternoon for them to arrive, effectively costing us one of the two days we had to enjoy the spa facilities. The bathtub in our suite was unusable due to a missing plug, which was never fixed. The bed was not properly made, which is a basic expectation in a hotel of this category. The most concerning issue, however, was the handling of a parking dispute which I raised formally with the hotel and for which I have yet to receive any acknowledgment or response, despite following up twice. Upon arrival, I confirmed with the front desk that parking was included in our reservation and that no further steps were needed. However, at checkout, I was informed that I had failed to obtain a specific ticket upon arrival and was required to pay full parking fees out of pocket. The staff showed no willingness to take responsibility or offer any assistance—despite the confusion being entirely due to incorrect information provided by the hotel itself. It was not only an inconvenience but also a disappointing display of indifference toward guests. All this raises serious concerns about management and the service culture more broadly. While the Metropol benefits from its location, views, and certain facilities, the service falls well short of standards. For travelers seeking true 5-star service in Portorož, options like the Kempinski Palace offer a significantly more polished and guest-focused experience, and mid-range alternatives such as Hotel Marko offer better overall value. Until meaningful improvements in service are made it's difficult to recommend the Metropol without reservation.
