At breakfast, although it was clearly a busy period, there was no seating available in the main dining area, so we sat in the bar instead. That was absolutely fine, and I would like to recognise that the staff in that area were friendly and welcoming.
Overall, the stay was slightly disappointing. Small improvements to accessibility, staff awareness and communication would make a significant difference to the experience of guests with disabilities and chronic illnesses.
When I arrived at the hotel, I asked about disabled and Blue Badge parking. Unfortunately, the staff were unable to answer my questions or advise where the nearest accessible parking bays were. I was simply told to use the Euro Car Parks. While that is an option, it is quite a walk for someone with a chronic illness and disabilities, so having accurate information would have made a real difference.
I also asked about using the accessible toilet located behind reception. I was told that every time I needed to use it, I would have to return to reception, ask a member of staff to unlock it, and then wait for someone to become available with the key.
I would encourage the hotel to think about what that experience feels like. Would an able bodied guest be expected to announce every toilet visit at reception and wait for permission to use the facilities? It is uncomfortable, undignified and creates an unnecessary barrier for disabled guests. If the concern is misuse or vandalism, a much more practical solution would be to unlock the accessible toilet during the day and lock it at night, allowing those who genuinely need it to use it independently.
I also called reception to request extra pillows, as I was sharing the room with my son and we were using separate beds. I was told they would check availability, but no one came back to me and the pillows were never delivered.
