A gem in the centre of Samarkand
It was our first time staying in a guest house rather than a hotel, and choosing the Stariy Marokand turned out to be a wonderful decision. Located much closer to the historic heart of Samarkand than most hotels, it offers everything you would expect from a great place to stay: privacy, security, cleanliness, excellent breakfast, reliable Wi-Fi, and 24-hour support.
What truly makes this place special, however, is the warm and welcoming atmosphere. It feels less like a hotel and more like a home. Perhaps it is the wonderful personalities of the owners, who quickly became our friends, or the peaceful courtyard filled with trees, flowers, and even roosters, where guests can relax and enjoy the sunny spring breeze. The homemade breakfasts — with fresh omelettes, baked goods, and cakes — were excellent, and the many thoughtful touches made travelling far less stressful.
I was especially grateful to receive my room at 6am without any extra charge, to have breakfast whenever needed, and to be able to leave luggage in storage for two weeks. The hosts were always incredibly friendly, caring, and helpful.
There is also a large guest lounge with a TV, sofas, and a big table where groups can comfortably spend time together indoors. The guest house is particularly well suited for families with children, as the courtyard is secure and the main gates are always kept closed.
The location is both convenient and charming — situated between the central park and the boulevard leading to the old town and Samarkand’s main historical attractions. The area is clean, green, and full of fountains and lovely cafés, making it enjoyable to walk around even on hot days. Evenings are especially pleasant, and Samarkand feels very safe at any time of day or night. The Timur Mausoleum is only about a 5-minute walk away, while Registan Square can be reached in around 15 minutes.
