Beautiful room and property, wonderful breakfast! Absolutely loved it!

40 Winks is brilliantly placed for anyone visiting Durham. It's close to the centre - a pleasant and brief walk to the middle of town and to the Cathedral. We were visiting for my son's graduation from the university and it was excellent. We booked a bit late and got the last room in the place, but for Durham on the evening of a graduation it was very good value. We had one of the smaller Woodland rooms but honestly, it was lovely. Very well appointed, lots of small details well thought out (nice Molton Brown bathroom goodies, nice towels, etc, etc), plugs in all the right places, well lit (so rare for a hotel), etc. The bathroom was small but ideal and the shower was excellent. I couldn't fault it. Apparently the larger rooms and suites are really lovely, though I didn't see them myself. I'd be surprised if they weren't from everything else that I saw. By chance my cousins had booked the same hotel that night, and George was absolutely brilliant, opening the bar for us. He is delightful and couldn't have been more helpful. My cousin told me that she stays there regularly when visiting her son at the university, and always chooses it over all other hotels in Durham. I didn't have breakfast but my husband and cousins said it was superb. Although there technically isn't parking, we found it easy to park on the street more or less outside the hotel, and once there we were able to pay for parking via one of the usual parking apps and easily extended the parking when we needed to.

I'm really struggling to think of something that I would have improved. I mean a car park would obviously have been lovely but given the location it would be impossible and parking was easy despite the business of the week and the central location. Honestly, this place is great.

Lovely staff, good food, comfy, clean.

boiling hot asked for my boiled eggs not to be soft boiled ie white cooked, breakfast very slow and eggs with hardly cooked whites - couldn't eat and had to go. Plug by my bed was not fixed properly dangerous View from my window was a garden like a jungle
