There is a version of an Asheville trip that people plan for months and then spend in the car — a cabin so remote that the leaf drive eats the whole day. The Biltmore Hideaway is the other version. It is a private two-bedroom lower-level suite tucked into the treetops of historic Kenilworth, half a mile from the Biltmore Estate gate, an easy walk from Biltmore Village, and five minutes from downtown Asheville. You get the woods and the ridgeline outside your window, and you are back in them minutes after leaving anywhere.

WHO THIS IS FOR
Couples on a leaf-season weekend who want the Parkway by day and a fire by night. Two friends doing Biltmore and the breweries. A family of four with a small one along — we keep a travel crib and a portable high chair here so you do not have to pack them. Anyone with someone at Mission Hospital, under a mile away, who needs a quiet, private, genuinely comfortable place to land at the end of a hard day. And people traveling with a dog, which we welcome with approval.
It sleeps four, in two real bedrooms, with one bathroom.
THE FALL STORY
Kenilworth sits at roughly 2,150 feet, and that matters more than it sounds like it should. Asheville's foliage does not arrive all at once — it walks down the mountain through October. The high peaks above 5,500 feet turn first, in late September. The Parkway corridor between 4,000 and 5,000 feet comes in mid-month, which is the classic drive. And in the last third of October the color finally reaches town elevation — this hillside, the Biltmore grounds, the French Broad valley. It is the longest and, to our eyes, the loveliest stretch of the season, and it happens directly outside the screened porch.
So a fall stay here can be whatever you want. Chase the color uphill to Craggy Gardens, Graveyard Fields or Max Patch early in the month. Drive the Parkway, fifteen minutes from the door, when the corridor peaks. Or come at the end of October, stay put, and watch it happen from a wicker chair under a blanket.
When the sun drops and the temperature goes with it, you come back in, pick up the remote, and the gas fireplace takes about a second. Stacked stone, a smart TV above, a leather sectional in front. It is the most-used thing here from October through March.
And on November 3 the Estate opens Christmas at Biltmore — it is decked out floor to ceiling, candlelight evenings, the whole thing. Half a mile from that gate — go at dusk, be back in a warm room twenty minutes later.
THE SCREENED PORCH
This is the room people write about. It runs along the back of the house, screened on three sides, up in the canopy — no neighbors in view, just trunks and leaves and, through the gaps, the ridge line west of town. There is a wicker seating group at one end and a dining table at the other, so coffee happens in one spot and dinner in the other.
French doors open onto it directly from the king bedroom. That detail is easy to skim and it is the best thing about the layout: you wake, open the doors, and the morning comes in before you are dressed or awake enough for stairs.
In October the view from those chairs is gold and rust. In spring it is a green wall. In summer, deep shade — its own luxury here. In winter, with the leaves down, you see further than at any other time of year. One guest: “the porch was our favorite spot.”
THE ROOMS
The living room is built around the fireplace — stacked stone, remote-controlled gas, a reclaimed-timber mantel, a smart TV above. There is no cable, but you have a smart TV to watch what you'd like and local channels through a digital antenna.
The kitchen is a full kitchen, not a kitchenette: granite counters, a full-size refrigerator, a full-size induction range and oven, microwave, dishwasher, Keurig, electric kettle, and the cooking basics, dishes, wine glasses and baking sheets to use them. We leave organic compostable K-Cups and organic tea, and a reusable K-Cup if you would rather grind something local.
Dining is at a custom live-edge table with four counter-height leather stools, in the open space between the kitchen and the living room.
The king bedroom is the larger of the two: high-end, plush mattress, walk-in closet, built-in shelving, and the French doors to the porch. The queen bedroom has its own wardrobe, a second high-end, plush mattress, and a window into the trees. Both have USB and standard outlets at the bedside.
The bathroom is the surprise. For an 800-square-foot suite you would expect serviceable; instead there is a large walk-in shower tiled floor to ceiling in travertine, a granite vanity, a towel warmer, a stained-glass transom that throws color across the wall in the afternoon, a hair dryer and spare toiletries. A tankless water heater means the hot water does not run out, whoever showers second.
Laundry is a full-size washer and dryer of your own, with iron, board, all-natural detergent and wool dryer balls — which changes what you pack for anything longer than a couple of nights.
ARRIVING, AND PARKING
You have your own entrance, to the left of the front porch, reached by a lighted outdoor walkway and twelve stairs. Check-in is self check-in with a keypad, so you arrive when you arrive — no coordinating, no waiting on us. Check-in is from 4:00 PM, checkout is 10:00 AM. Ask if you are interested in an extended stay. If it is available we will offer it to you.
One dedicated off-street parking spot comes with the suite, and a second is available on the street.
WHAT IS AROUND YOU
Kenilworth is one of Asheville's oldest and most walkable neighborhoods — Arts and Crafts cottages beside substantial old houses, mature trees, sidewalks, hills. Biltmore Village, with its shops, galleries and restaurants, is an easy walk. Six breweries and cider houses are close by, and Casablanca Cigar Bar is down the road.

BRINGING A DOG
We love animals, and your four-legged travel companions are welcome with approval. A guest last September put it better than we could: “For anyone nervous that they allow pets, don’t be! A member of our party who is very sensitive to all smells and dander was shocked when I told her it was pet friendly — because best of all, the place is CLEAN.” We ask only that they stay off the beds and the furniture, indoors and out — if you cannot keep them off the couches, please bring covers. We are strict about the no-pets-on-the-bed rule, and please keep them out of the landscaping. If you leave for the day we ask that you please leave them crated. We approve up to 2 dogs.
TWO HONEST THINGS
We would rather you know these before you book than discover them at 11 PM.
First: this is the lower level of the home, and others live upstairs. You have your own entrance and your own everything, and you never have to see them — but you will occasionally hear footsteps, a vacuum, piano music, a television or laughter overhead. Most guests stop noticing after the first evening. Some would rather have a freestanding building, and we understand completely. There are also twelve stairs down to the door — worth knowing if that matters to you.
Second: the Hideaway is up in the trees, but it is inside the city limits. Along with the crickets and the spring peepers you will hear traffic, trains and the occasional ambulance. This is not a silent, secluded mountain cabin, and we will never describe it as one. What it is — a quiet, private, wooded perch two minutes from the Biltmore gate and five from downtown — is, for most people coming to Asheville, the better trade.

The place was well appointed and clean. The king size bed was fabulous! However, if you don’t like stairs, noise and no yard for your dog, don’t stay here. It’s by a hospital so lots of ambulances and helicopters. There is also someone in the neighborhood with a really loud motorcycle. Lots of road noise. There are earplugs and a sound machine but it was no match. The hot water takes a long time to come on so you end up washing with cold water. There are thirteen pretty steep stairs to get to rental. Just know that going in.. If you are elderly and not used to steps

The owners have provided everything you would need for a pleasant reprieve. Very convenient to everything. Since the owners live onsite, they were available whenever we needed them or had a question.
