The Screen

Realistically, for most people, this hotel will probably give you the biggest room you'll get in Japan. We had a room with a large, low, bed, two armchairs and a table and a good size wardrobe to keep things organised, as well as the room having a lot of free space to organise ourselves. It was a genuinely stunning room too - sort of traditional looking but with modern conveniences. The bathroom was also huge, with a shower and a jacuzzi bath. The layout of the hotel is a little bit odd - our room was technically the same floor as the road but the way you're meant to go involves going to the basement level, through reception and up some stairs (there's a shortcut through a door marked staff only which you may end up nipping through if you're on that floor...) - there was a rooftop bar but it was closed when we tried it. Staff were all very nice and incredibly helpful. The included breakfast (we went for western style) was varied and delicious. Location wise I would say it's pretty good - you're not in the hustle and bustle of downtown Kyoto but it's very walkable and there's a bus route nearby from Gion. There's a metro station roughly 10 mins walk down the side of the imperial palace grounds. Laundry is service only, no machine but if you need simple washing facilities there's a good laundrette about mins away that takes around an hour - leave your clothes and walk around the national park. Overall I'd definitely stay here again.

Situated in a beautiful and quieter part of Kyoto but well connected to the main sites, bus stop nearby and subways within reasonable walking distance. Rooms was super spacious and staff were very friendly and helpful throughout! We had the breakfast everyday via room service which was very good and overall just really enjoyed our stay here, would stay again!
