The location of the hotel is great - and it's a beautiful old building with a great history. The staff were kind and helpful and the bed was excellent - we slept really well. The bathroom was basic but clean and certainly adequate for our needs. We very much enjoyed the old photos on the walls and the antique ephemera display. The ground floor had some amazing rooms and the oak-panelled dining room with its beautiful ceiling and elegant columns was a treat to behold.
Stains ! Both chairs in our room were stained and that made a bad impression. The curtains were a bit skew-whiff ( sorry, I re-hung one ) so that let the room down a little. The decor was a bit basic - it made the upper floors look a little gaunt. My advice would be to partner with a local school or art college and have some massive and colourful paintings on the wall, and make the partnership into a positive community-focussed advert for the Crown ! Breakfast was generous and tasty but the scrambled egg was sort-of solid on the day we were there.

Location of hotel excellent. Staff were great, especially Charlie. Breakfast was good. Bathroom and room very clean.
Decor very old fashioned and colours very depressing. Lots of brown. Needs a safety handle in bathroom as quite difficult to get in and out of bath even for a shower.

Breakfast was poor. The choice and quality is better in budget hotels like Premier inns. Scrambled egg looked grey and thoroughly unappetising. Staff were struggling to replenish food and had failed to put out some crockery items.
Bathroom very dated and steamy. TV was very dated. TV guide unavailable through remote control and digital channels impossible to watch because of picture breaking up.
