The place has a very relaxing and charming mountain lodge feel with a beautiful view. We enjoyed authentic delicious Japanese meals which were cooked by the son of the owners and they were genuinely hospitable. We felt completely taken care of.

Well located guest house in Madarao. Staff were excellent and very hospitable. Lift to/from the main ski area each day as required but we often walked as it was so close and easy. We were picked up from and dropped off at local train stations (Myokokogen and Iiyama respectively) by a staff member. Food was good particularly the one dinner we had at Maroudo. Onsen was a good temperature. Highly recommend.
Toilet/bathroom was not close to the rooms we had but this was a very minor inconvenience.

I have only met few people in my life who are as kind and generous as the Ogawa-San family who run Pension Maroudo. I arrived exhausted and nervous, having stubbornly decided to walk the Shin-etsu trail alone and without a guide, which proved to be a trying, although completely life-changing experience. Maroudo-San was a tremendous, and necessary help for me, in accomplishing this journey and I would not have been able to do it without their help. The area is most busy in the winter because of the unique snow sport facilities, but if you like me enjoy the beautiful solitude of the mountains in the rainy season, Pension Maroudo is the place for you. The food I was served was absolutely exceptional, and worth the trip alone. I had the pleasure of this lovely couple’s company at dinner time, and when they both came to pick me up from my amazing day-time ventures to the trail. They drove me to the beautiful Maguse Onsen, which has an outdoor bath with the most stunning view. I was sad to leave, and I cannot wait to revisit this wonderful place and the people who live there.
