It was very welcoming and all the staff were very kind and responsive. Everything was very organised and the check in process was seamless and efficient. We had the kaiseki dinner and private sho-fu which we booked in advance. Highly recommend both if this is your first time staying here. The place was stunning and would definitely book again. We regret not doing a longer stay.

This place is one of the oldest in the area. Each corner of it is a scenery for photo shoots. Also location is great, it’s right next to the bus station. No need to walk uphill.
There are 2 options of private onsen. Make sure you pick the more expensive one that’s location in-house of the hotel. It’s beautiful and quiet.

good location which just 3 minutes from bus terminal. Hotel and clean, historical and well maintained. Staffs are polited and helpful. Huge rooms, big toilet, seperate reading room, massage chair(s) is facilitated. Rare in Japanese with the this price.
Two dinning areas are facilitated in the hotel. In which one is nicely decorated and the other just look like a casuel restaruant. Onsen is small, if you are looking for great onsen with unique or beautiful scenery, that may not be your best choice.

I loved all the attention that the staff provides to the guests, it feels like staying in a grandma house where you can relax because you know that there will be someone that will care about you.
Shuttle service that take you from the Arima Onsen station to the ryokan, very impressing dinner and breakfast for a full Japanese experience.
The private onsen unfortunately is aesthetically poor than the public one and unfortunately for me and other guests with tattoos you don't have chance (I don't blame the fact that tattoos are not allowed in public baths, I respect the cultural differences and rules. It's to say that maybe they could do something about the design and decorations of the private ones)

The hotel is located in the heart of the walking area. It's very convenient to travel. This historic hotel is well maintained. The interior is well decorated. The staff is very caring. The food served at the hotel is very meticulous. The hotel has an their own hot spring. But you can also walk to the public hot springs nearby.

The onsen is outstanding and we enjoyed the delicious dinner.
Our room is on level 4 and have to climb up and down wooden stairways (no lift).

The onzen is one of the best I've been to. The restaurent staff, especially the waitress from "China" took further steps to look after my daugther who wasn't feeling well.
nothing. All is good

The staff were incredibly accommodating and made me feel like royalty. The hot spring was so relaxing and the room and atmosphere of the place was warm and comfortable. The food was the best part by far. I have a fish allergy and the chef fixed me seafood free meals and I am forever grateful. It was so nice that I barely left the hotel.
It was a bit noisy because of the building construction. The people above me were very loud late into the night. But that isn't the hotel's fault.

The Ryokan is a beautiful historic building lived by shoguns of its era. We stayed in the beautiful Raku room. It was the biggest room we stayed during our month long trip across Japan.
It was so spacious - it had a floor dining space during the day that converts into our bedroom with comfortable futons in the evening from 6pm. Next to the dining/bedroom space, separated by wooden sliding doors there’s a covered small balcony with windows overlooking a lovely stream and special books related to Tanizaki and Mita Celadon on display. On the other side of the dining/bedroom space, separated by wooden sliding doors, there’s another table/chair seating area don with cabinets for luggages, fridge and a relaxing massage chair. There’s also historical potteries on display. The message chair was wonderful to relax in after a hot spring bath. Adjoining this room is a big separated bath, toilet and dressing room.
Each space was well designed and simple yet so rich with multi-century history that was captivating to the soul. Great opportunity to live in a piece of well maintained heritage building.
The room costed A$649.12 a night which is quite pricey. The breakfast was ala carte Japanese meal instead of buffet style typical to most hotels. The private onsen (costs ¥3300 for 50min) is in a separate building about 5min walk away and need some guidance to locate.

As I was from Kobe, Arima Onsen had always been a familiar place. We chose Tosen Goshobo, upgraded for very special occasion (anniversary + birthday).
And thankful our stay went far over than what we had expected.
Hotel offered an anniversary surprise for us, which we appreciated a lot.
We loved the architecture -- its room (fabulous! We didn't want to leave), its Japanese garden, its salon (and the choice of library), wine cellar.
We found the semi-outdoor hot springs was playful and was really a good idea.
The quality and the quantity of food was just excellent, diner or breakfast. We had feeling that also the timing between a dish to another was well calculated.
We are so grateful to staff, friendly, caring, who made our stay so memorable.
Nothing.

Excellent experience, the service was impeccable. Each and every staff were friendly and helpful from the moment we arrived till our departure. We were very excited and looking forward to our stay and were not disappoint. If the onsen was definitely the highlight, the room and the food were just as impressive.
There's something special about staying in an old traditional hotel but this was so very kept and comfortable. It's really something special.
Thank you for having us.

Overall atmosphere was great. Staff were very helpful, especially a staff member named 师慧真 who went the extra mile to explain the dishes, culture as well as etiquette to my parents who didn't understand Japanese. Room was spacious and onsen was amazing.
Our room had a cracked sink. Although this did not have any major impact on our stay, the staff should have noted this before our check-in and informed us when they gave us an overview of our room.

super convenient location. just a few minutes’ walk from the bus station and train station. the main walking street is just nearby.
English speaking and they really take care in explaining to me, a first timer to an onsen and ryokan on the basics and how to use the onsen.

the sound proof is not good given it’s a very old building. we heard people talking at mid night

very stylized and traditional at the same time. i was able to experience the most from what i could expect from an onsen ryokan. public onsen was awesome. food was great.
i wasnt told that the private onsen that was in the website picture gallery was in maintenance (out of service). honestly i was very expecting a lot to enjoy the private one but it was a bummer that i couldnt. they do have a temporary private onsen available (which i did experience) but i would say their public one is better than the temporary private one. i would recommend to notice visitors that the main private onsen is not useable before they make a reservation.
