Staff , location & breakfast was very good .
Bedroom a bit dated - couldn’t shut the curtains . ( remove pelmit & make closing curtains an easy necessity .

The location was good. It was about a 15 minute walk to Edinburgh Castle, and also very near the University of Edinburgh main campus. Our room was quite sizable for a hotel in an old building in this part of town.
Decor and furniture was a bit dated, and the lighting in the room was poor. It also needed some more storage options

We stayed here during the Edinburgh Tattoo weekend and honestly, the staff deserve their own standing ovation. Super friendly, always smiling, and so helpful that I briefly wondered if they were auditioning for a hospitality award.
The room was spacious and the bed comfortable — though at about 140 cm wide, it’s definitely a “relationship test” bed. If you like personal space, you won’t find it here.
The building itself is fantastic: a former hospital with high ceilings, quirky charm, and the kind of atmosphere where you half expect someone to wheel past with an old‑fashioned IV stand. The location is brilliant too — we walked everywhere, feeling very smug about our step count.
Breakfast was… fine. Not “exceptional,” unless your definition of exceptional is two types of cheese, some ham, salami, and coffee that tasted like it had been emotionally hurt at some point. A bit of salmon, greens, or wholegrain bread would have taken it from “meh” to “yay.”
Now, the room cleanliness. Let’s just say the carpet had seen things. The doors and wardrobe looked like they had been on a long sabbatical from cleaning. Impressive, in a museum‑exhibit kind of way.
The bathtub was the real adventure. There was a sticker warning it might be slippery — which was adorable, because “slippery” doesn’t quite capture the Olympic‑level ice rink situation. Showering required the balance of a circus performer. Also, the showerhead was mounted so low that even at 174 cm, I had to do a sort of yoga‑backbend to wash my hair. We mentioned it to maintenance, but judging by other reviews, this is simply part of the hotel’s personality.
Considering we paid over £300 for one night (Tattoo weekend pricing, of course), I expected a bit more — especially in the cleanliness and bathroom department.
