Kirklands House is tucked away off a quiet country road, around 10 minutes' drive from Melrose. It's a former Dower House so the building is wonderful and the setting - within wide lawns and mature borders - is quite magical. Our double room was cosy and quiet and along the private corridor, we had sole use of a large bathroom (including a bath). Our host, Donald, was charming and attentive. Breakfasts were superb, with home-produced eggs and tomatoes, home-made jams, and other items proudly sourced from local butchers and bakers. We stayed two nights and on our second day, travelled by train to Edinburgh, which was simple - a short drive to Tweedbank and an hour into the city. This was a perfect location for us - quiet, comfortable, easy access to Edinburgh (and to Melrose for cafes and restaurants) and a feeling that it was a little bit special, which was the perfect way to end our Scottish road trip.
Nothing. It would have been nice to stay another day to get into the local countryside and Melrose itself. We would highly recommend it as a base, either for a relaxing stay in beautiful countryside or as a base for trips into Edinburgh.

Kirklands is a beautiful home situated in tranquil grounds close to Melrose. Douglas and Penny were wonderful hosts. Delicious breakfast, comfy bed, great pillows.
Douglas is a great source of local information and recommendations.
There is nothing not to like about Kirklands.

Location was very good for getting about. Breakfast was good. Host was friendly but you did have to ask for things like toiletries, even basic shower gel, and heating.
The room we thought we had booked wasnt the room the host offered to us on arrival. And in fact we had to pay a further charge to get the room we had expected. The property is old and the room didnt have all the modern conveniences, ie en suite bathroom, heating on demand, large TV etc.
