Aguas Calientes seems to offer either high-end or budget hotels, and I wanted something in between. Despite all the negative reviews about noise, I booked Inti Pacha Palace and was in for a delightful surprise.
First, the staff: fantastic. Shout-out to Piero (I think that's the correct spelling). He was friendly and helpful every time I had a question. They provided a filling packed breakfast for my early start to Machu Picchu.
As for the hotel itself, the reception area is fairly large and functional, and you can sink into one of the sofas while you wait to check in. I booked a double but was given a twin, which suited me fine. It was spacious, with a huge overhead fan (a bit noisy but got used it the gentle hum), a large TV, and a desk and chair and wardrobe. The shower pressure was strong and the bed was comfy too.
There was a festival going on until the early hours, but that's Aguas Calientes for you. Having tired myself out trekking, I slept surprisingly well in the end. One piece of advice: bring earplugs. And one tip for the hotel: why not supply guests with complimentary ones?
