Kip 54 Monks Bar

The location is great for the old town, Guns Wharf and the city centre. The room was comfortable and a little quirky, with an old style bath in the middle of the bedroom.

The lack of a stand up shower could have been awkward and a breakfast offer for the price would have been good.

Lovely renovation of a 200 plus year old character building. Wonderful staff. Great food. Very comfortable room with opening windows.

3 flights of steep stairs to get to room. Very appreciative of the staff member who carried up our bags.

Small boutique hotel with only 4 rooms. Nicely decorated and close to old historic port district. Nice bar and restaurant that serves good meals. Manager Debora was very helpful.

The usual narrow steep stairs to top floor. Restaurant not open for breakfast. Room maintenance leaves a bit to be desired - no toiletries, soap etc on arrival. Worst feature was that the Wifi signal on the top floor was so weak we couldn’t use it without going downstairs. We found it odd that there was nobody around in the mornings including at check out time. We just left and posted the key through a mail slot.

Great location, and plenty of parking nearby. Room is traditionally decorated with similar style furniture and overall is nice. Great that the bed is king size. The staff at the bar were helpful when needed.

I really wish this place wasn't marketing itself as 5* accommodation - it's defintely not. It's irritating to read things like 'free toiletries' when, in fact, there aren't any. The rooms are directly above a bar, and there is NO soundproofing - DO NOT stay here if there's any kind of function or music night going off downstairs - you will not sleep and will feel totally fed up. The DJ set on the Saturday was not communicated to us and went on until midnight, followed by an hour's worth of shouting and yawping from the guests outside, with no evidence from staff that they were moving them on given they had guests stating over. The communication is really poor - no reply to my messages/emails/voicemails requesting a late check in due to driving from the Midlands. Really frustratingly, I've now informed three different staff that the phone number showing on Booking.com is wrong and actually belongs to a previous employee...come on folks, this is basic stuff, and you need to sort this given that the property isn't manned and only offers a keybox out of hours (but nowhere is it stated what the hours are). There is no room service offered - again, contrary to the 5* claim. Expect to stand downstairs at the bar with the tipsy locals at 11pm with your pyjamas on begging for clean cups, teabags and towels. An ok stay, but marred with some pockmarks, and not worth their own hype. Might have felt better had our expectations not been as high.
