Great characterful, historic and quirky house with lovely views and an exceptional chef
Great characterful, historic and quirky house with lovely views and an exceptional chef
Staying at The Great House is like stepping back in time. Although somewhat quirky if you embrace the old house (warts and all) you are treated to a property of enormous character and charm. The rooms are of great proportions and full of historic features. The outside spaces are lovely each with its place at certain times of day. The pool and pool house are lovely and well kept. The internet is intermittent, the water sometimes too but the air conditioning in the bedrooms is great and much appreciated. The setting, gardens and terraces are in keeping with the house and the wildlife is abundant. We were also thoroughly spoilt by the amazing chef who cooked up authentic Caribbean cuisine each evening. Although an ongoing project I am sure, we felt privileged to spend 10 days in this historic property and would love to return one day.

How does one start to describe what was almost a dream. The Great House is unique. Spacious grounds to explore. Fresh limes to pick from the trees. The whole place just oozed history. The Great House it self is just stepping back in time. I thought i should be wearing a dress out of Gone with the Wind. The very beautiful house is like staying on a film set. The view from the drawing room down a mahogany line of trees to the Bay. The dinning room, especially candle lit, was the most breathtaking experience. The fabulous four poster beds, in every bed room, well wow, true glamour. The beautiful swimming pool with its pool cabin with fridges reminded us the we were in the 21st century. Although a very very orivate property we could easily pop out to see other parts of the island. Shirley Heights especially on a Sunday with the steel band. Any one of the 365 marvellous sandy beaches. The unique capital, St. Johns. The market place with the fresh fish catch, or buying the nutmeg with the mace still on it. Or just out of town a fabulous sushi restaurant. Lots of opportunity for water sports, water skiing, diving, banana fun, or a cruise around the island with lots of rum punch served. But The Great House is the biggest draw and i was hard pressed to leave. The owner ensures that you are well looked after and in a very professional but personal way by the full time staff at the house. At all times you were beautifully cared for but never intruded upon. The beauty of the property and the wonderful views across the bay and out to sea were just yours to enjoy. No chattering fellow tourists to impinge on your privacy. The house is more that big enough for you to each do your own thing with several reception rooms and fabulous outside areas for sitting, sun bathing or outdoor dining. A very special place that we felt privileged to have called our home for three glorious weeks.

What a fabulous week! This is an experience of the real Antigua, whilst living in beautiful surroundings with wonderful staff to look after you. The views from the terrace every morning whilst you sip your tea and coffee in the morning are second only to the views from the swimming pool terrace. The house and estate are a reminder of the history of plantation life, and just opposite you can visit a similar plantation open to the public to learn the history and function of each building. Nothing is far away in Antigua... beautiful beaches, the Capital St. John's, supermarkets, and so forth. But a car is absolutely essential, and a 4x4/jeep probably sensible. The staff of Vivienne, Joe and Felix are so obliging and helpful. All in all, a memorable, restful experience where we returned really feeling that we had visited Antigua, with all its history and culture, whilst enjoying a special time in a beautiful property. If you would like to stay in a resort where you could be anywhere in the world.... this is not for you!
