This apartment was very comfortable and pleasant. Super close to most of Santa Barbara’s desired activities. I recommend it highly. Sandy, the host, was most helpful and available.

Walkable to everything - the harbor, the beach, the funk zone, State St., the train station, ect. The unit was very spacious and access to the rooftop garden was a cool perk!

We enjoyed Sandy’s property and the location was perfect for our family. We biked or walked everywhere and the kids loved being so close to everything. It’s a charming place and the rooftop garden is very cool. Sandy was a great host.

Sandy’s place was amazing. He is a great host and property is really nice. Location is unbelievable. Walking distance to all of the highlights Santa Barbara has to offer. State street, Funk Zone, Sterns Warf, The marina, all next door to you. Sandy’s place was really nice and clean, and he was so nice to make sure are check in process was easy and that we were comfortable. Really appreciate everything. I will most definitely stay here again if I’m in the Santa Barbara area.

I took the train to Santa Barbara because my toddler is really into trains right now. We loved that the place was close to the train station, Beach, museum and restaurants. Beautiful roof top deck to eat, place had exactly what we needed. Thanks Sandy

This is a great home for a getaway with family. We were able to have dinner and enjoy the evening. Just like being at home. So close to the beach and entertainment. We walked everywhere, so didn't rent a car. Lyft was cheaper than uber if we needed a ride. All the comfort of home. Our only issue was the deep tub. Getting into it at our age was a bit of a challenge. Would stay again without hesitation.

Kitchen could have better cooking accommodations dishes , cups , glasses
Bath tub height hard to get in and out for seniors
Rooftop hydroponic garden amazing and we could pick fresh and delicious salad greens every day
Bed very comfortable

This is a great location, and it is an older house with character. The rooftop space is shared with the other two rental units. The stairs are accessible from the front porch, so you will have some people using your porch to get to the stairs. There is not a lot of privacy.

My wife & I loved staying here. Great location & communication with owners was very easy. Loved the rooftop garden too.

What a great space for my wife and two you boys. Although we didn’t use the kitchen it had everything you will need. The master bed and bedroom space is exceptional. The quiet street and location to restaurants and shops was perfect, only a block from beach, restaurants and shops. Honestly you can’t ask for anything else with Chapala Gardens.

This is the second time we have stayed in this property and it is just about perfect. The one bedroom apartment is open, spacious and the bed is super comfortable. The kitchen is full size and it is easy to make meals if desired. The location is awesome because it is so close to the beach, the pier and restaurants--but it is also quiet (although there is occasional noise from the train). BUT...unfortunately they have not yet replaced the shower which is a definite disappointment. It is a large tub but in order to access it you have to climb over a tall ledge (and I'm pretty tall and still had some trouble) Plus with only a rain shower and barely adequate water pressure it takes forever to wash your hair. Meanwhile water splashes all over the place in spite of a round shower curtain. It's a shame that such an awesome place can't have a descent shower. Of course then I'd want to stay much longer--hahaha!

This is a lovely place, made especially beautiful by all of the flowers and plants that surround and are on the porch (huge yellow hibiscus, lots of succulents) and the rooftop. It is extremely convenient to lower State Street and the waterfront. On the downside, parking can be a bit tricky on weekends, as the area is so popular. And, the additional charge for using the sleeper sofa seemed excessive. However, I would certainly return here. It's an unusually convenient and beuatiful find.

The house is the perfect distance to the beach, restaurants and shopping. It's spacious and clean. The AC didn't seem to work from every vent. The only suggestion would be to add one more shower curtain. Had to be very aware of not getting the wall wet or the bathroom floor.
We would definitely return to the house! Thank you for such a nice stay.

My husband and I stayed in this charming retreat for a weekend full of family wedding activities. The home is centrally located so restaurants and the beach were within walking distance and farther afield activities were a short drive. The front porch is perfect for relaxing, surrounded by Hibiscus and other greenery and there is an amazing rooftop deck. The host Sandy is fantastic and very helpful. We can't wait to stay again!

Really enjoyed the location and it was a beautiful renovated older home.
Parking on the wknd was tight. Fine during the week.
Nice quiet neighborhood and wonderful bed.
Only negative was the shower. Showering in a high sided tub was was difficult and the controls and curtain made it kinda difficult too.
That’s it though- nice place!

We just returned home from a 4-Day stay at Chapala Gardens unit 1. It is an adorable house in a perfect location behind State Street and a block from the beach. While on our visit we enjoyed a stop by from the owner who answered all of our questions and checked in on us. We also ate at local restaurants … within short walking distance, went whale watching on The Condor Express, took 3 kids to the Moxi museum, ate ice cream, went to the Maritime Museum and enjoyed the beach all without use of a car.
Pros/ Cons of the house / stay:
Pros:
- clean house
- clean new looking fridge
- beautiful master bedroom
- comfortable foldout couch that is wide and flat so two can share easily
- cozy front porch chairs for coffee or wine sipping in the afternoon sun
- roof top garden access - we were allowed to pick Roma tomatoes because there was excess, chives, basil and salad greens. We ate then every morning with eggs we brought and made grilled cheese with sliced tomatoes and basil with salad.
Master bed is comfy
- extensive DVDs but we were always too tired to watch.
- olive oil and salt in the cupboard
Cons
- update some of the furniture / decor could use an update
- update kitchen gear… add a nonstick fry pan, small serving and mixing bowls… there are a few random and odd sized bowls, but none to beat eggs in for example. I used a mason jar. Most of what is there is thrown together. More glasses… there are just two drinking glasses and a just a few other odd chipped tea cups. Same for measuring cups, and the like. Colander.., we own a vacation rental and have all kitchen gear regularly inventoried and restocked. Takes maybe $200 per year to keep it tip top.
- parking is a pain. Often you luck out nearby but must move off certain sides of the street twice per week for road sweepers weekly. For a Wednesday move I had to park far away. I moved it for the Thursday sweep and got closer to the house. But I got my car pinned between two cars on the day when trying to leave because someone parked too close behind me at night. Keep and eye out on sweep day or day before to get a good spot.
- please leave extra trash bags under sink. We cooked, so filled both the smaller sized recycling and trash bins. ❤️
Tip
- coffee is a drip machine… heads up. I walked to Goat Tree close by to get espresso drinks in the morning.
Would return, and bring some kitchen gear to make it easier.

The mornings on the front porch, location, spacious abode, comfy bed and rooftop garden were delightful. Sandy was an adept communicator and we hope we have the opportunity to return to this lovely space. The decor in the living room could probably use an uplift in comfort and the "fine china," as primary kitchenware was a bit unusual, but we treasured our time on Chapala street.

Chapala Gardens #1 is comfortable with lots of space. The bedroom is especially pretty. The location is perfect, walking distance to the beach and marina, restaurants, and shopping. It is a safe neighborhood. The host is friendly and responsive and encouraged us to pick salad greens from the amazing rooftop garden. We were happy we chose this place for our 2 week vacation in Santa Barbara. The only negatives are temperamental Internet service and a deep bathtub in the shower/tub combination which made getting in and out a little tricky. I appreciated the grab bar! If we return to Santa Barbara, we would like to stay at Chapala Gardens again.

Chapala Gardens was the perfect size for two and is in the best location. It's walking distance to West Beach, the downtown area, and so many incredible restaurants. Sandy was also a very responsive host and he maintains an great garden on the rooftop.

We had a fabulous visit. The location is amazing, parking wasn't a problem (even though we had to move the car a couple of times) and we loved spending time on the porch and roof garden.

This is a perfect location in Santa Barbara. The beach, pier, State Street, Funk Zone, and Amtrak station are all within easy walking distance. The unit is charming with a lovely front porch to sip your morning coffee. Kitchen is fully equipped with everything you would need. Fabulous rooftop garden with fresh grown produce. We loved our stay here!

This historical home is charming, beautiful and perfectly located. Sandy was easy to work with and thoughtfully provided an additional mattress since we had 3 teenagers with us and needed a bit more sleeping space.
Santa Barbara was wonderful (as was Solvang). Glad we were able to explore this wonderful area.

This was a wonderful way to get to spend Christmas with our grandson based at a nearby Naval base. The fireplace made it so cozy and the bed was the most comfortable we’ve ever had!!

Property was very spacious and amazing to be staying in a 100 year old building. Bed was especially comfortable. The neighborhood was very pretty with very old trees and mature vegetation.

We had a wonderful week away in this charming and historically important home. The bed was very comfortable, the chairs on the front porch were thoroughly enjoyed, and the rooftop garden is an amazing oasis. In addition, the location is just marvelous and within easy walking distance of most of what we wanted to do including the beach, pier, and restaurants. The apartment is very bright with lots of windows (if you require a dark bedroom to sleep then you'll want to bring a sleep mask) and beautiful cross breeze. I so appreciated the tea kettle, which many places don't provide any longer, and was an example of the thought and care that went into creating this pretty oasis.

Being part of the history of this area added a great deal of pleasure to this trip. This historical home delivers on charm and romance. The area is the best for walking and access to the central part of town and the waterfront beaches, marina and breakwater.
