Our stay at Hotel Rural Casa dos Viscondes de Várzea was absolutely unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed by Maria, who is quite simply the kindest, warmest and most wonderful hostess you could hope to meet. Her passion for the house, its history and her guests shines through in everything she does, and she made us feel completely at home.
The hotel itself is stunning. Every room is filled with beautiful antiques and fascinating historical pieces, giving it so much character while still feeling comfortable and relaxing. It feels less like staying in a hotel and more like being invited into a remarkable family home.
The views across the surrounding countryside are breathtaking, and we spent hours simply enjoying the peaceful scenery. The swimming pool was another highlight—spotlessly maintained, wonderfully tranquil and never overcrowded.
The food and wine were exceptional throughout our stay. Every meal was delicious, showcasing fantastic local produce, and the wine was excellent. We were also pleasantly surprised by how reasonably priced everything was, representing outstanding value for the quality.
I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. It was one of the most memorable places we've ever stayed, and we already can't wait to return.

We loved everything about this hotel
It felt like a dream location is exceptional, rooms are very big, and it takes you back in time.

Grandeur of the public rooms was amazing. I really liked the communal dining, all at the same table, slightly awkward to start with but great when people start talking and the meal progresses. First evening meal was good and good value when taking into account wine ( we had probably 3 good glasses each) is included. Served to the table and plenty of it.
Perhaps we were unlucky with our room. It was certainly large enough and well enough furnished, but very dark and musty. Opened the curtains and should have had a glorious view across the valley but the window was totally obscured by vines growing across it. Bathroom worked, but should have been updated 50 years ago. The whole place needed some TLC and money spending on it but I guess if all was at today’s standards it would have been twice the price. If you decide to stay here you will be impressed, but be aware of the above.
