This was my first time to Penang and this unique historical setting took me back in time as well as to a new country. The elegance and beauty were beyond expectations. You could get carried away with the surroundings but what is the quality of the stay? Well it is equally amazing. From the man that welcomes you at the gate with a beautiful smile to the reception staff, who will help with anything you request. (In my case sending postcards back home.) The rooms are clean and so many little thoughtful ideas are added. (Thanks to the efforts of Hoque) The daily turn down service was unique each evening. At breakfast we were treated like guests to their home by Jalal and his colleagues. In the evening enjoy a drink from Shobor who is great behind the bar. This hotel is unique in making you feel like you are at home. This is maybe because it was a home in the past. But the current custodians are welcoming guests on a phenomenal level. I would like to end with the queen of the house. Ginger the cat who is an absolute delight to see roaming and ruling her house. I will be returning .
Maybe the only area that needs improvement is the pool. The location is by a busy road, although hidden from the road. It’s noisy and the pollution from the road affects the water.

Stunning location with a great historical story to it. Guided tour was complimentary and was great.

Don't have your laundry done there. It's ridiculously expensive compared to anywhere else and not in proportion to the other costs, because apart from this, price-quality it is great!

The pool and the staff were it’s saving grace
Day visitors to the property ignored barriers meant to prevent them from accessing guest rooms and this happened multiple times each day. Cafe was booked out mainly by non residents for every night of our stay. Menu was reduced by two thirds anyway as chef was away. Only alternative was a set meal costing £100 approx per person in fine dining restaurant which wasn’t to our taste. Eating facilities for residents should be prioritised as three mails were sent to us before check in advertising these facilities which we could not access. When we complained we were met with an ignorant and rude response from staff member we complained to. Coffee machine in room but no pods and no instant coffee for kettle which you had to put on floor to reach plug. Water was scalding hot and I do mean scalding.
