The location is very peaceful, ample parking, and inside a 1640s fort! This was my fourth stay here.
Breakfast was a little chaotic with one person seemingly doing all the work.

The location was fabulous. I was nice to be able to walk around the inside of the old fort at any time. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of variety with different choices each day.
The staff insisted on changing my towels every day even though they were not left on the floor. I mentioned this to the lady of the desk but the same thing happened the following day. It was hard to get hot water out of the shower but this might have been down to antiquity of the plumbing.

Certainly historic - there's not many properties where you can take a personal tour of the castle walls every night. The views at sunrise and sunset were pretty spectacular. The staff we spoke to were helpful. The price we paid wasn't extortionate for August. Rooms were clean and reasonably appointed.
In no way horrible - just a little bit faded - you could see that when it was originally done (as a hotel not as a fort!), it would have been quite special. However, quite a few basics not attended to - broken tiles around the pool, sun loungers broken/un-varnished, Flaking paint on the walls. Just needs some care and attention to bring it back up to scratch. If your interest in the history outweighs the negatives, definitely worth considering,
