We loved the outdoor space, the wonderful attentive staff and the cleanliness. We also found the location to be perfect. A short walk from Trastevere, but benefitting from the higher elevation so slightly cooler.
Nothing.

This is the 4th time that my husband and I have stayed at the Grand Hotel Gianicolo. I just love the location, but I've been to Rome many times and do not do as much sightseeing as a first time visitor who may prefer being closer to the center. I would not let that deter you, if you love tranquility and old world service or if you have car rental. You can safely park across the street from the hotel, where parking is plentiful, or pay the hotel to park on their grounds. That is another reason we like the location. Parking is super easy there and the area is safe. We enjoy staying in Trastevere, especially during the hot summer weather in Rome. We especially appreciate being able to cool off in the large pool within the enclosed walls of the hotel. A former convent, the rooms are not especially large, but are comfortable and the location is perfect to escape the downtown crowds after a day of sightseeing, shopping or working! Trastevere is a busy area with lots of shops, restaurants and historic spots. The center is an easy 20 minute walk from the hotel. Also, the view from the Janiculum Hill, only 5 minutes from the hotel, is breathtaking. We prefer relaxing at the hotel in the evening or even spending a few hours at the pool in late afternoon, when it is still very hot in late summer. It is a pleasure to enjoy the vast buffet breakfast in the beautifully decorated dining area. The bed is very comfortable. We often take a taxi to the center of the city for 14-18 Euros, even when we have a car. We also took the bus this time. It is 2 blocks froms a few bus stops that take you downtown in about 20 mintues for about 2 Euro. If you do not have a prepaid ticket, you can buy a ticket on the bus with your credit card. The staff is highly professional, courteous and helpful. My husband left something in the room and we received an immediate response to our inquiry and staff is arranging to send it to us in the U.S. We will be returning here in the winter.
The only drawback is the location, if you want to be downtown, but for me, this is an advantage and why we keep returning. The pool was a definite plus with the heat wave Rome experienced this summer. Also, the roof garden is currently being renovated and will be ready for October. The area is beautiful and I am sure that this will be a draw. Dining in the garden is enchanting, but I would have liked to see a few more traditional dishes on the menu. The service was impeccabile, the homemade bread was delicious, but I was not enticed by the gourmet dishes listed on the menu. I had spaghetti, which was OK, but not up to my expectations, and I only ordered it because I really could not eat any of the other dishes.

Loved the pool and undercover pergola was so refreshing after a half day of sightseeing in the heat . Hotel in a quiet area close to fabulous restaurants down in the town .

Great location and comfortable beds
Lovely but very 70’ties style, could do with an update. There a strong smell of chlorine inside which I think they use to clean with. Alsmost any where in Rome I as a gluten allergic can find gluten free pasta ect , but not at the hotel. I do had dinner one evening, fish and I must say that it was not very good at all. So maybe get a new cook. The reception feels more like a 2-3 star, definitely not a 4 star hotel .
