About this house rental

Mi casa es su casa! Welcome to my home. I am a biologist conducting research on climate change in the Monteverde cloud forest. When I am in Monteverde for research, this is my home. In 2025, I started renting on their competitor's platform (AirBxx) and have nearly all 5-star reviews if you would like to check those out. I only just started renting on VRBO. I have taken great care in the design and decoration of this house, which was built in 2020. I hope you enjoy! There are two bedrooms each with their own full bathroom. The kitchen has an island and is fully equipped so you can cook comfortably if you want to. There is a cozy living room space and a large loft room that can be used as an additional sleeping space (with a futon), an office or place for yoga or morning workouts. Every room has an amazing view of the Gulf of Nicoya. Enjoy the peace of bird and cloud watching while you sip local coffee from the deck. The house is close to all that Monteverde has to offer (appx 12 minutes to downtown Santa Elena) but is located at the top of a quiet and peaceful valley.

My house is unique in a number of ways, so please read on to see if this works for you.

The stove runs off a propane tank which is around the side of the house. The tanks are old and often leak so please keep the valve closed when not in use.

Since the house is in the mountains, it can be windy. The wind is often intense from December through February and it can also be strong for short periods throughout the year. If you think wind noise will make it difficult for you to sleep, I recommend earplugs for your visit anywhere in Monteverde.

There is a small field lab underneath the deck. Monteverde does not have a general use laboratory for researchers so when I built my house, I decided to build my own. My field crew works in the lab on Mondays as they are repairing sensors and setting up the schedule for the week. They have a separate entrance from the side of the house and will not need access to the house at all. Generally from Tuesday-Friday, they are working in the field. You might hear them picking up or dropping off gear but nothing other than that, unless of course it is a rainy day, in which case they might have no other option but to work in the lab. I will be in touch with my research crew about bookings so they minimize their use of the lab when there are bookings.

I have taken great care to support local artists and artisans with this project. Most of the furnishings in the house were made by locals and as much of the materials as possible were locally sourced. If you are drawn to a painting or illustration, let me know and I can point you to the local gallery where you can find something similar.

The hot water is sourced by a solar hot water heater. In the main bedroom, the water heats up quickly while it takes a little longer to reach the other bathroom.

We had a wonderful time at Sybil’s place! The view is amazing and that is more than enough to qualify this place as outstanding. We spent hours on the porch relaxing while drinking coffee and watching the clouds go by, identifying birds and gazing into the ocean. The house itself is well designed and comfortable with thoughtful touches throughout. The kitchen has everything we needed and there were even board games for our family to use on lazy days. The house is 15 min from everything we wanted to do in Monteverde and yet the location was quiet and peaceful, out of the fray of bustling Santa Elena. Sybil was very communicative with us and gave us great suggestions for her favorite places in the area; she is very knowledgeable given her long-term research in the area. We are already planning our next visit and would highly recommend this unique and beautiful place!!
