Staff are great and very accommodating. They clean regularly - it's a hostel and a very old building - it could use a deep clean and a refurbish....but it's a hostel and it is cheap. That considered, I felt it was very clean. It's very close to the Royal Mile so the location is great. I felt like my things were mostly safe - mainly because you have to scan to get into the room. I had a locker with a lock. If someone really wanted into the locker they would be able to but it considering there are cameras and you have to scan to get into rooms - I feel that would deter most people from wandering and thieving. You just have to mind the people in your room.
It's right across the street from a bar that has a large outside area. They are open till like 3 am playing dance club like music. It was extremely loud and right outside my window. I was there over the weekend in early September so it's still pretty high tourist season, so I don't know what it's like Mon - Thurs nights and during winter.
If you are gonna be going out late till 2am that will not be an issue. I tend to get up early and go for a run....I struggled. But I was mentally prepared, so it didn't bother me.
I don't think the rooms have A/C so I imagine the summer gets very warm in the rooms...the window would only open about 10 inches and there is no screen. It was okay for September.
These were just minor inconveniences for me during this trip.

Value for money.
Music Party place on the opposite side of the Hostel was so loud that we couldn't sleep till 3am.
With luggage, it's wasn't easy to walk to this place from the train station because of the stairs on the way.
