How luxurious the room looks
2.0
not a lot
The hotel was having extensive building work which we were not informed of, we had room 88, was on the main road, did not sleep for two nights due to Road noise, people noise, buss stop and station for coach trips.
Room was extremely cold, had o get 2 heaters to warm room up, smelt badly of dirt and building work.
Room had lots of cobwebs, looked at window, mould, dirt and old cobwebs all over it, was disgusting, but to be fair the flooring and bedding were clean.
Lots of mould in bathroom, I am aware of age of building and some updates have been tried but bathroom needs a good tile overhaul so as not to see mould. blinds were very dirty, dusty and had putty on top of them.
The hotel has coach loads which were loud and not at all mentioned in description, hotel is nothing like its pictures.
Food was awful,
£100.00 for a meal for two of us, Beetroot, Goats cheese, orange with walnuts on a bed of little gem lettuce , the salad was in-fact, 3 lumps of crumbled goats cheese, a few slices of beetroot, a peeled satsuma with the pith still on, not nice slices of skin and pith free orange, no walnuts and on a bed of a bag of sour gone off lettuce.
Steak £28.00 was gristly and tough, no well presented with 1 whole partially cooked tomato and chips poor quality
Panko chicken was dried out.
Cheesecake was crumbly and not soft, tasted freezer burnt.
The waitress did take the overpriced wine off, even this was not what we ordered as they had run out.
We did not complain at the hotel as every time we went to reception it was so busy, I didn't want to discuss in-front of so many people, as the area is so small.

A good buffet breakfast was available. Rooms were large and very comfortable with a very spacious bathroom.
When we were at the hotel they were in the middle of renovations to the older side of the hotel and courtyard area. It took a long time to check in, with large queues, and the bar was a small section off the breakfast area that was sectioned off. I'm sure things will be much better once renovations are finished and it didn't detract from a nice stay.

Staff were all friendly. Room was lovely and spacious. Breakfast was lovely. Location was great for central access. Plenty of parking spaces available.
Issues with the lift being out of service, however this was temporary

Good selection of breakfast. Unlimited hot drinks. Very good location.
Pillows were hard, which for us isn't what what we like.

Food was good and room well appointed.
The spec said parking and naively I assumed this was available and not something I would have to pay an additional £12 a night for. The cost whilst reasonable should have been highlighted as it effectively adds to the hotel cost despite the fact that it was not a hotel car park. Result - no tip.

Staff pleasent
The hotel was undergoing maintenance and it disrupted our stay. We would have appreciated an email to inform so we could book another hotel. This was Valentine’s Day and we booked this hotel as we stayed at Christmas and liked the ambiance, which unfortunately was missing on this occasion.

The hotel is fairly central and right next to the station and a reasonably priced car park. The room itself was an o.k size and comfortable.
Despite checking in online as requested we still had to wait in a queue to get our room key. The room itself was in a separate building which is joined to the main hotel with a long corridor and some function rooms so it was quite a trek to go back and forth. We had asked for our room not to be made up on the first day yet this request was ignored.

Reception staff very helpful and friendly, upgraded the room and gave us drinks vouchers for a birthday celebration which we thought was great , the decor had so much character and charm, the gardens were so inviting
Nothing to say

Stylish hotel. Good location near the station.
We were initially given an awful room. Wallpaper peeling off the ceiling, barely furnished, tired and uncared for. We were not prepared to accept this, particularly at the price we paid for an executive room. After complaining, we were moved to another very nice, albeit smaller room. The hotel was very busy due to a Christmas party. There were long queues at reception. The party guests were very noisy when they returned to their rooms at the end of their evening. Someone had an after-party in their room just across the corridor from us. Not a good night’s sleep for us.
Also, a bit disappointed with the choice of continental breakfast in the morning, although plenty for those who want full English.
We’ve stayed at this hotel twice before. Our previous experience was much better.

Everything, the staff were welcoming and helpful. The breakfast was always hot and had a lot of variety. It's only a 5 minute walk to the city centre. Bed was super comfortable and the overall look of the place is grand. Also the welcoming chocolate and crisps was a nice touch.
There was nothing that me and my wife didn't like. Everything was perfect. The only nit pick I had was that the pillows were a bit to soft for me but that didn't impede a good night sleep.

Local to train station. Good price. Clean. Friendly and helpful staff. Great breakfast

location, nice room, excellent breakfast
the inconvenience of having to go on a route march round the hotel before climbing to sets of stairs as there was a conference on which meant you couldn’t use the lift on the first two floors

Good location for our stay, railway close by and 5 minute to city centre.
Room very spacious and bed comfy however housekeeping very average.
Food at breakfast and dinner good and waiting staff friendly.
Housekeeping in the room was very average, provisions were not restocked and the bed was made poorly during our stay.

Generic hotel room, good size, good facilities, good location. Called ahead for an early check in, offered to pay but was told there was no way they could facilitate even though I explained we had travelled 3 hours. It’s little things like this that make the difference, for me and this was dissapointing.
Early check in was not possible due to ‘quality control checks’. I have worked in hospitality/public sector all my life and felt that this really let the hotel down.

Nice re-furbished bedroom with plenty of room and a comfortable bed
Only 1 small lift for all the guests in the hotel so a bit of a wait sometimes to use it

This hotel has lots of character and history dating back to Victorian times. So if you want something different then this may your cup of tea. They also have a Roman garden full of statues and the giant lounge has many historic items and the staircases date back to the original Victorian days and there's lots of paintings, depicting characters from those days. and giant chandeliers, giving an air of elegance. The beds were comfy too and the buffet breakfast was ok, although it's the same everyday.
. However housekeeping leaves a lot to be desired, although I think they do their best.
Our room in the main original part of the hotel had cobwebs and dust in parts of the room, the sash windows did not work and were held up by two plastic bottles. The bathroom fan was noisey, although they did replace it when we asked. The bathroom edges had mildew and the light switches are confusing. The bedroom furniture is made up of a suitcase design but the side tables had no drawers to put smaller items into. No shaving mirror in the bathroom. No shops nearby, although across the road from the station, and about a 20 minute walk to the city centre. Few eating places nearby, although the Town Crier across the road offers Wetherspoon type food. Meals in the hotel were extremely expensive (Burger £17!) Parking is £12 a day but the station car park is a lot cheaper.
