Caloura Hotel Resort

Location. Nice views of the ocean. The garden below and path to the ocean was a nice surprise.

Similar to other comments breakfast buffet was not commensurate with the 4-Star hotel rating. We ate the snack bar—food was good although expensive.

We loved our stay at the hotel. The view from the rooms, restaurant and pool are just amazing. The room was nice with a nice balcony to chill and watch the sunset.

The only thing that can be improved is the food. The breakfast was okish but for a 4- star hotel it can be improved as well as the dinner.

Exceptionally friendly and helpful front desk. Alfonso Costa, especially, was cheerful, informative, and by far the best. Food at the snack bar was good.

Breakfast was a bit boring - basically the same every morning.

The Caloura Hotel Resort has one of the most beautiful locations in São Miguel. The setting is, without a doubt, one of the most gorgeous spots on the island, and this remains the hotel’s biggest asset. We have been customers for many years, specifically for this reason. The staff were also a positive point, particularly the employees who have been working at the hotel for many years, like Emanuel and others. They were friendly, professional and clearly committed to providing good service despite the shortcomings of the property itself.

Since the hotel was purchased by the Bensaude group, the prices have increased significantly, but the hotel’s amenities and overall quality have not improved accordingly…in some areas, they have actually become worse. The price now suggests a much higher level of quality than what is being delivered. The breakfast was disappointing in terms of variety and did not feel appropriate for the price of the hotel. The mattresses in our room were extremely old and uncomfortable, sinking noticeably under our body weight. The room itself also showed signs of age and lack of maintenance: there was humidity on the walls, cracking paint, and the bathroom mirror was so old that the edges had become dark. Lack of outlets by the beds. There were no curtains other than the blackout curtains, meaning that if you wanted some privacy while still having natural daylight in the room, you had no option but to use artificial lighting. Basic bathroom amenities were not provided. The hairdryer was extremely old, and even the diffuser attachment was partially melted and could not stay properly attached. Several of the sun loungers were broken, other looked dirty and old, there weren’t enough small tables next to the loungers, and most of the sun umbrellas were visibly old, with strings hanging from them. There was also no option to exchange pool towels. Even the bathrobe provided in our room was dirty. None of these issues on their own would necessarily ruin a stay, but when you add them all together, they give the impression that the hotel is not being adequately maintained or updated. The location is spectacular and the long-standing staff are excellent, but a beautiful location cannot justify continuously increasing prices when the quality and condition of the hotel do not keep up!
